SUMMARY:Rebel Walk: Tesco Riot
DESCRIPTION:Guided heritage walk exploring the history of the Stokes Croft Tesco Riot \nDubbed the ‘Tesco Riot’\, the disturbances of 2011 on Bristol’s Stokes Croft were part of a wave of national rioting across the country. But behind the headlines is a more complex story of exploring citizen solutions to social problems\, and attempts to establish alternative ways of living. The ‘Riots’ were a visceral response from a community that was and is on its own journey\, that finds itself overwhelmed by economic forces which threaten to squeeze out of existence the spirit of independence which has come to define the area. \nIn a period of growing inequality and a desperate housing and homelessness crisis\, the discussion around property\, the landed and the landless\, the disappearance of the commons\, and the privatisation of just about everything\, is the issue of our times. With the huge systemic inequalities that are created thereby\, the need for alternative thinking and action has never been so vital. \nLed by Chris Chalkley\, founder and director of People’s Republic Of Stokes Croft. Rebel Walk: Tesco Riot will explore the social and cultural experiment that some claim Stokes Croft to be\, and the role of PRSC in that experiment\, as we come to realise the necessity to find better solutions to the disaster that conventional economics has created. \nHow To Book and Key Information\nBooking in advance is essential – tickets are Pay What You Can starting from £3+ booking fee per person and you can book your tickets via the Trinity website. Please follow this link: https://www.trinitybristol.org.uk/activities/art-of-resistance/events/rebel-walk-tesco-riot \nThe walk will start and finish at Space at People’s Republic Of Stokes Croft (17-25 Jamaica Street\, BS2 8JP). \nThe walk will last 2 hours and will be followed by an opportunity to stay around in the bar afterwards to buy refreshments and ask informal questions. \nIf you have any access needs you’d like to discuss before booking\, please contact the box office at email hidden; JavaScript is required or by calling on 0117 935 1200. \nAbout Art Of Resistance\nRebel Walk is part of Trinity’s Art of Resistance\, a two-year National Lottery Heritage Funded project celebrating Bristol’s alternative and activist heritage through a series of workshops\, walks\, talks\, exhibitions\, and oral history. \nPhoto credit: © Jonathan Taphouse\, 2011

He has an infectious passion and love for Bachata\, and says he wants to teach us all some new moves as he promotes the Bachata-style of dancing alongside spreading his love of the music and culture from his homeland. \n WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?\nThe classes aim to teach you the beauty of Sensual & Dominican Bachata (Latin Dances) to help you enjoy your social dancing. \nYou will learn:\n– basic steps and technique of Sensual & Dominican Bachata\n– fun and easy to lead moves and routines\n– musicality – how to interact with the music\n– men’s and ladies’ styling\n– how to connect with your partner and really enjoy your dancing. \nNo partner or previous dancing experience required. Just come along and have some fun! \n WHAT IS IT SENSUAL BACHATA?\nSensual bachata was created in Cádiz\, Andalusia\, Spain\, by Korke Escalona and Judith Cordero. Korke learned the basics of bachata in 1998; then he started developing his own dance style by understanding how the leader (traditionally a man) could lead the body of the follower (traditionally a woman) to interpret the music. Sensual bachata is an independent dance form with strict lead and follow principles. The dance is an interpretation of the music with mostly circular movements and body waves. When the music has stronger beats\, however\, the dance also uses isolations and dips. \nPlease contact us for any more info you may require.

SUMMARY:Digital Witness: An introduction to Storytelling and Advocacy
DESCRIPTION:*** All School of Activism 2.0 events will be held online ***\nBook Tickets\nDigital Witness has been running digital storytelling workshops for 5 years working with a variety of agencies and organisations. In this workshop they aim to give an outline to the process of how they deliver the workshops and share some of the experiences and skills they have gained over time. \nThey will introduce and demonstrate the Seven Steps of Digital Storytelling – the building blocks of the technique. They will then present a few digital stories from around the world and facilitate a discussion about where and how these stories have been used for advocacy\, including local environmental campaigns\, issues around gender based violence and patients rights among others. They hope this discussion can lead to exploring new and innovative ways this technique can be used in your practice and future projects and campaigns. \nWhat is a digital story?\nDigital stories are brief first person videos created by combining age-old storytelling narrative practice with modern-day technology and digital media. Digital storytelling is different from the art of making short films in several key ways. \nFirst\, digital stories are typically produced in small\, intensive workshops\, where trained facilitators put much emphasis on story development and sharing. Storytellers are encouraged to put their stories ahead of the technology\, and a primary aim of the process is to show people the transformative effects of giving voice to their own challenges\, triumphs\, opinions\, and struggles. \nSecond\, digital storytelling puts the tools of production directly into the hands of the storyteller\, who is trained to use free or inexpensive digital editing tools to craft a video from her/his own materials\, including the recorded narrative and important personal photographs. \nFinally\, digital storytellers are encouraged to use their stories\, both to start conversations with friends\, coworkers and family\, and in more formal efforts at community building\, education\, program documentation\, and advocacy. \nHow is digital storytelling used in community projects?\n\nFor community digital storytelling facilitators\, these stories are useful both as a process and a product. As a process\, creating a digital story can build skills in reflection and critical thinking\, oral\, written\, and visual storytelling\, and multimedia production. As a product\, you can use a digital story for outreach and organising\, fundraising\, documentation and reflection. \nWhy is digital storytelling effective as a tool?\n\nThroughout history\, story has been used to teach\, to entertain\, to express\, to advocate\, and to organise. It is through the sharing of stories that communities build their identities\, pass on traditions\, and construct meaning. Community building efforts use story to remember the past\, to understand the present\, and to imagine the future. \nStories build community:\nBoth internally and externally\, stories can connect individuals to others who share their experiences and generate the ability of individuals and organisations to act. One goal of community building is to become part of someone else’s story\, to have their story become part of you. It is through the act of telling that we realise that our stories are interconnected with others. \nStories can create the conditions for change:\nWhen we build relationships through storytelling\, the process often encourages individuals to think differently about themselves and about their capacity to act both individually and collectively. We tell stories as evidence of our work to galvanize energy\, to raise funds\, and to educate. \nTickets available now from Headfirst. The suggested donation of £4 will help us keep the School of Activism as accessible & low-cost as possible\, £8 will subsidise a ticket for someone else – but no-one turned away through lack of funds!\n\nThe School of Activism 2.0 is a two week programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft over the Easter holidays. The workshops are intended to be empowering experiences equipping people with the tools to challenge the status quo\, contest power structures and ultimately to change the world.\nWe learn by doing.\nWe make our own future.\n\n\n\nSchool of Chativism\n\nIf you're feeling hyped about all this educating\, and you wanna connect with other SoA students to talk about what you've learnt\, and/or discuss the future of ethical social media\, then this is for you... \n\n"The School of Chativism is an experimental social media space that will run for the duration of the School of Activism 2.0. SUMMARY:Philosophy For Children
DESCRIPTION:*** All School of Activism 2.0 events will be held online ***\nBook Tickets\nPhilosophy\, the “love of wisdom\,” begins with wonder about the world. It is one of the oldest academic disciplines\, but traditionally it has not been considered a subject for children. Yet young people ask philosophical questions and are curious about philosophical issues: How do we know things? What is beauty? How are the mind and body connected? \nYoung people do not need to learn philosophy; it is something they do. \nThe second in a series of workshops to provide young children the opportunity to engage in philosophical discussion\, develop their ability to think and reason with others\, foster independent learning. \nWe will cover a range of stimulating philosophical questions about fairness\, the environment\, friendship\, inclusion\, sharing\, right and wrong\, manners\, beauty\, pictures\, the emotions\, dreaming and reality and more. \nThis is a project which uses teaching resources developed in Seattle. See more about the project here https://vimeo.com/136588083 \nWorkshops are delivered by a SAPERE P4C facilitator \nNB:\nSuitable for children from the age of three upwards.\nThese sessions are for Children only – no parents allowed!\nParticipants will be required to keep their “Camera On” at all times.\nBefore the session PRSC will seek consent from parents / guardians to record the workshop to share in a digital archive\, but this is entirely optional and won’t affect your right to attend the session. \nTickets available now from Headfirst.
