SUMMARY:Is Artificial Intelligence (AI) Destroying Human Creativity?
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nDiscussion and Interactive Workshop\nBYOD – Bring Your Own Device\nJoin interdisciplinary artist\, educator and founder of the interdisciplinary education start-up MoSAIC\, Gaz Lawrence for a thought-provoking workshop and discussion on the topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its impact on human creativity. This event invites participants to engage in an interactive exploration of the use of AI in visual art\, led by Lawrence who himself combines science\, tech and fine art to create innovative ways of perceiving the world around us. \nThroughout this workshop\, you’ll delve into the complex relationship between AI and creativity\, examining the ways in which machine learning both replicates and challenges human biases. Lawrence will share insights into his own artistic and educational practice\, showcasing how AI can be used as a tool to augment our own creativity. \nThrough collaborative activities and group discussions\, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the potential benefits and drawbacks of using AI in the creative process\, while considering the implications of this rapidly evolving technology in the broader context of art and education. \nThis is a unique opportunity to engage in a stimulating conversation about the future of tech in the arts and education\, and to explore the intersection between creativity\, technology\, and human expression. Don’t miss out on this exciting event! \nGaz Lawrence’s Art: www.instagram.com/gazlawrenceart\nMoSAIC: www.themosaic.uk \n\nPeople's Art Fair: Spring // Friday 31 March - Sunday 9 April 2023\nThe People's Art Fair (PAF) is a ten day long cultural festival providing a platform for visual artists\, poets\, musicians and workshop leaders to show off their talents. PAF is kept free for artists to take part in\, and all ticketed events apply the principle 'no one turned away through lack of funds'.  PAF is a natural extension of our work to break down barriers and increase inclusion and voice\, and is a direct challenge to the exclusionary idea that 'real art’ is exclusive and only created by\, and relevant to a small cultured\, wealthy elite. PAF promotes creative cultural practice as an essential tool for people to challenge or highlight social injustice and to galvanise change.\n\nThroughout the fair we collaborate with local social-minded creatives to offer workshops; a poetry open mic; and a music jam session\, inviting everyone to share and celebrate their talents during the fair. The net result is a visually diverse and culturally rich event featuring hundreds of artworks from over 70 artists; and the emergence of a confident\, mutually supportive creative community that is joyful to be part of.\n\n Browse the People's Art Fair: Spring Exhibition online\n \nPeople’s Art Fair: Opening NightJoin us for the opening night of the People's Art Fair - be among the first to see all the amazing artwork on offer\, access your inner artist with some fun & easy creative activities\, and have a drink while you browse\, schmooze & enjoy live music from Brainbeau. SUMMARY:Dismantling Rape Culture and Male Violence: A Survivor-led Course for Men
DESCRIPTION:TicketsSaturday 14 & Sunday 15 January\, 11:00 – 16:30 \nJoin SLEEC for this free two day\, in person course to support you with the insight\, knowledge\, ideas and tools to navigate sexism\, challenge rape culture\, nurture the best parts of being a man and actively make needed change. \nHaving curated and taught this course\, online over the last two years\, we are now launching our first in person Men’s Learning Course: Dismantling Male Violence and Rape culture: A Survivor Led Course for Men. \nThis course will be an open\, honest\, compassionate space where we collectively learn through discussion\, questioning and challenging ourselves. Led by women who are survivors (of rape\, sexual violence and domestic abuse) who have extensively worked within survivor services and campaigns to end male violence – offering you the opportunity to ask ask any uncomfortable questions or those you have felt unable to ask in a non-judgemental space. \nThe course will include different speakers\, such as Lewis Wedlock\, whose work is directly and indirectly connected with these subjects and these conversations. It’s essential that we listen\, learn and gain knowledge from those with different experiences and perspectives on what the roots causes of male violence and rape culture are. \nAlthough we will explore difficult topics and we will have challenging conversations\, we will also be learning from a place of joy\, connection and humour. \nThere aren’t enough spaces built like this\, but if we build them together then we can both understand and support each other from a place of empathy and care. \nThis is an exciting opportunity to deeply learn in a different way; where we unlearn as a community and a collective rather than with division\, fear and blame. \nIt can feel overwhelming seeing violence and abuse and not knowing what to do. When so many men are causing extreme harm and you feel powerless to stop it\, it’s hard to know how and where to begin challenging this behaviour in everyday life. This course has been lovingly built to help you face these challenges powerfully. \nWe need you to see the severity of danger we all face\, especially women and marginalised genders. We need you to see the very real violence we all experience\, by men. We need you to understand the real impact of sexism and the patriarchy. \nIf you want to address the actions of men and help create a world where women are actually safe to walk the streets – then we invite you to come to this course and join a beautiful community of men\, learning how to work towards ending male violence and sexism. \nCourse content:\n• Understanding what sexism and misogyny looks like in 2023. What is the impact on all genders?\n• How patriarchy maintains power dynamics\, gender roles and male violence. How sexism impacts men.\n• What is rape culture and how it shows up in ways you don’t always see.\n• How to actually intervene in situations of violence and aggression.\n• Unpacking the fear of rejection and vulnerability.\n• Nurturing positive masculinity.\n• Starting difficult conversations\, navigating defensiveness and helping other men unlearn rape culture.\n• Connecting to the experiences of survivors/women and know how to actually help.\n• Exploring the complexities of sexuality\, sex work\, porn and kink.\n• Prevention work\, exploring accountability and community response.\n• How to challenge male violence and rape culture on a wider scale. \nReserve your free ticket here »

SUMMARY:Workers Can Win – Book tour & workshop
DESCRIPTION:TicketsJoin Bristol Transformed for an afternoon with Ian Allinson\, who’s been taking his new book “Workers Can Win” up and down the country to inspire new organisers and give them the tools they need to win working-class power. We’ll be asking Ian how the book came about\, what’re the most important lessons he’s learnt\, and what even is organising anyway? Following the conversation with Ian\, you’ll take part in a workshop that will give you a taste of some of the ideas and techniques from the book and get you thinking about how you can take them forwards into your own workplace. The event will end with an opportunity to ask Ian and other experienced organisers anything you’ve ever wanted to know about moving your colleagues to action and winning at work. \nThe Covid\, climate\, and cost of living crises all hang heavy in the air. It’s more obvious than ever that we need radical social and political change. But in the vacuum left by defeated labour movements\, where should we begin? For Ian\, the answer is clear: organizing at work is essential to rebuilding working-class power. The premise is simple: organizing builds confidence\, capacity\, and collective power – and with power\, we can win change. Workers Can Win is an essential\, practical guide for rank-and-file workers and union activists. \nWe ask attendees to give £4 that goes towards our costs of the event. If you feel unable to afford that but still wish to attend please get in touch and we’ll happily send you a ticket. \nTickets available from Headfirst.

SUMMARY:Psychedelic Sharing Circle
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an intimate gathering to talk about our experiences with psychedelics\, drink cacao\, and explore breathwork with binaural beats. \nI’ll provide cacao to open hearts at the beginning… \nWhether your experience was blissful\, life-changing\, challenging\, profound\, confusing\, or all of these things\, all at once – this sharing circle is a place where like-minded folk can come to offer support and keen ears. The circle is a gathering and co-created space\, where we can ask questions\, share our experiences and make sense of the unmake-sensible! Whether they be more numinous in nature\, or something more personal that we want to share. Most of all a place to connect and maybe even find some integration through the community. \nThe aim of the group is to create a safe judgment-free space to both support and celebrate the wonder of entheogens! \nIn each session\, we will have a main focus/question/ theme. This month is dosage and substances – the group will come together to share how much and what of and why! And explain the effects. Whether it’s for micro-dosing or ego dissolving. Safety is key\, and knowledge is power but please be aware we are not medically trained as a community and circle\, and any advice received should not be taken as such. \nWe will also create a space and time for anyone to come to the circle with something they’d like to ask advice on more generally – whether it’s a challenging experience or a vision that might be difficult to make sense of. \nBefore\, after\, and during the break\, we can talk freely and get geeky –  meeting other psychonauts or first-timers to chat philosophy\, science\, books\, and podcasts whatever we feel like! \nHalfway through the session – after our break – we’ll try out some Breathwork with Binaural Beats. Essentially breathing with some audio tones I’ve made to entrain our brainwaves to the Theta frequency. Let’s see what happens! \nPlease bring headphones/earphones as binaural audio only works if each ear receives a different tone. \nThose who have never used psychedelics before are beyond welcome to join and can come and ask more experienced trippers for advice –  with the knowledge that we are not trained\, medical professionals. \nA donation of £10 would be wonderful to share the costs.

SUMMARY:Bristol Gentrification presents: Is Bristol destined to become gentrified? + trippy Greek Symposium style after party
DESCRIPTION:TicketsIn simple terms\, gentrification is the migration of a higher socio-economic class of people into an area that traditionally housed those from a lower socio-economic class background. Across the UK\, the more inner-city you go\, the higher the influx of more affluent people you’ll find\, encouraged by job and investment opportunities\, amenities\, convenience\, and everything in-between. If you know Bristol\, think about how Easton\, Bedminster\, St Pauls etc. are changing and you have an idea of gentrification already. \nAlthough there are sometimes “positives” that result from gentrification\, such as lower crime rates\, cleaner areas\, regenerated buildings\, the bad always outweighs the good. It necessarily always has done so since it was first conceived in the early 60s by Islington sociologist Ruth Glass. \nThe phenomenon is mostly caused by the affordable housing endemic that our country faces\, and results in social ills such as: homelessness\, which is set to increase by a 1/3rd by 2024 (66\,000 more people than today – ref.1); unaffordable exclusion zones or “exclusionary displacement” (ref.2); the direct displacement of social housing residents (ref.3); cultural alienation that leads to residents moving away (ref.4)\, increased inequality and much else besides. \nBristol was the 5th most expensive place to live in the UK last year (Zoopla)\, and the uncivilized statistics above increasingly plague our city due to private developer greed\, neoliberal government policies and inept politicians. \nCome along and hear: \n★ Personal testimonials witnessing the change in St Pauls – Lawrence Hoo (poet)\n★ Bristol as part of the national picture – Vicky Spratt (i’s Housing Correspondent; author Tenants: Stories of Britain’s Housing Shame)\n★ The role that social housing can play – Matthew Buckham (Communities Director\, Sovereign Housing)\n★ How is Bristol fighting back? – Cllr. Tom Renard (Bristol’s Cabinet Member for Housing)\n★ and speakers from the Stokes Croft Land Trust \nWith questions and discussion then being opened to the floor/discussion panellists. \nEvent by BristolGentrification.\nChaired by Henry Palmer\, author of Voices of Bristol: Gentrification & Us (2019) \nActions from the event:\n★ Donations for PRSC / support PRSC in other way (suggestions tbc)\n★ Join a union (with suggestions and how tbc)\n★ Vote for the right policies/sign and share petitions lobbying your local representative (with suggestions tbc)

SUMMARY:Artificial Islands: Book Launch with Owen Hatherley
DESCRIPTION:TicketsBristol Transformed are very pleased to have the wonderful Owen Hatherley back in Bristol for a chat and Q+A to launch his new book\, Artificial Islands: Adventures in the Dominions. \nGreat Britain has just left one Union. But might the island’s future lie in another Union altogether\, with its former colonial “kith and kin” in a trans-oceanic super-state with Canada\, Australia and New Zealand? \nWelcome to the strange world of the “CANZUK Union”\, the name for a quixotic but apparently serious plan to reunify the white-majority “Dominions” of the British Empire under the flag of low taxes\, strong borders and climate change denialism. \nArtificial Islands tests this idea that Britain’s closest relations are in these three countries in North America and the South Pacific\, through a thorough investigation of the townscapes and buildings of several cities within “CANZUK”. In this settler zone we can find some of the most purely modern landscapes in the world — British-designed cities that were built with extreme rapidity in forcibly seized territories on the other side of the world\, created specifically to make the colonisers feel at home. \nThis book uncovers the secret histories of nineteenth- and twentieth-century British architecture in the Dominions — from Neo-Gothic cathedrals and parliaments\, to rows of terraces and suburbs of semis\, Edwardian baroque museums and classical war memorials\, right up to post-war high-rise estates and Brutalist experiments. \nTickets from Headfirst »

SUMMARY:From Toppling Colston to the Hostile Environment: Opposing the racist offensive.
DESCRIPTION:The toppling of the Colston statue in Bristol was a seminal moment for Black Lives Matter\, (BLM) and exposed the widespread institutional racism across society. \nThe government responded by opposing all the demands of BLM and scapegoating refugees through the Nationality and Borders Bill. In addition\, there has been a crack- down on the right to protest through the Police Bill\, which has targeted BLM and environmental protesters among others. \nThe government has failed to respond to the refugee crisis from Ukraine\, just like they failed with Afghanistan a few months earlier. All refugees should be welcome here. \nThis meeting will discuss how we build resistance to the poison of racism and the divide and rule policies of the government and the far right that try to capitalise on them.

SUMMARY:Adblocking Bristol Airport's Greenwash
DESCRIPTION:TicketsIn 2020\, Amsterdam became the first city in the world to ban advertising for flights\, cars and fossil fuels on its transport network ad spaces.  Can we make Bristol do the same? \nBristol City Council has targets to become carbon neutral by 2030. At the same time\, it is providing advertising space for high carbon companies such as airports and airlines\, who directly encourage us to increase our emissions. Companies such as EasyJet are also using these spaces to greenwash their image making speculative promises about ‘Zero Emission’ travel far into the future to justify selling more tickets today. \nIn February 2022\, Bristol Airport was granted permission to expand to 12 million passengers per year after appealing against North Somerset Council’s rejection of their planning application. The expansion plans would result in 12 million passengers per year\, 10\,000 car movements per day and one million tonnes of CO2 being emitted annually. \nJoin Adblock Bristol\, Bristol Rising Tide and friends as we combine the creative arts practice of ‘subvertising’\, ‘culture jamming’ and ad-hacking with grassroots campaigning to remove big polluter advertising from our city. \nRegister in advance for your free ticket\, or just show up on the night! \n\nThe School of Activism 3.0 is a month long programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft. Running at PRSC during April 2022\, the events are intended to be empowering experiences equipping people with the tools to challenge the status quo\, contest power structures and ultimately to change the world.\nWe learn by doing.\nWe make our own future.\nThis project is founded on the ethos of community inclusion and empowerment\, so we offer pay-what-you-can solidarity pricing with no-one turned away through lack of funds. Please donate to help us keep the School of Activism affordable to all!
