SUMMARY:Too Many Cars
DESCRIPTION:Across the UK\, the car remains king. In our streets\, our neighbourhoods\, government transport budgets and urban architectures – the primacy of individualised car ownership has become culturally dominant. In our cities\, we are left with soaring air pollution\, inadequate public transport\, congested streets and rising greenhouse gas emissions. Motor advertising plays a central role in re-enforcing the status symbol of the car. \n\nJoin the People’s Republic of Stokes Croft\, Brandalism and Adblock Bristol to explore the relationship between car advertising\, air pollution and climate breakdown.\n \nWhy do car adverts typically show lots of space\, empty roads\, wild mountain passes\, exotic beaches and close ups of leather interiors? What are transport solutions being proposed in Bristol and the UK? The West of England Combined Authority are planning to spend £8.6 billion on new roads around Bristol.  Will electric cars solve our problems?  How can we respond to misleading car adverts to create breathable neighbourhoods\, liveable streets and high quality urban transport and active travel? \nThere’ll be food\, short films\, presentations and ideas for action. \nRunning Order\n6pm – Doors Open. Vegan dinner served. \n6.45pm – Presentations\, short films. \n7.20pm – Ideas for action \n8pm (approx) – Finish. \nFREE TO ATTEND. Registration requested. \nRegister here: https://actionnetwork.org/events/too-many-cars/

SUMMARY:A Roadmap of Resurgence – What can we learn from creative and community spaces around Europe?
DESCRIPTION:Tracing 12 countries and almost 30 projects\, this is a talk and discussion about how creative and cultural spaces can be catalysts for regenerating our communities and the infrastructure we need to thrive. \nGroups and organisations are reclaiming spaces and developing community and cultural centres all over Europe. Between October 2019 and mid January 2020\, facilitator and activist Danny Balla visited a diverse range of groups and collectives across Europe\, exploring the projects and spaces they’ve created. A Roadmap of Resurgence is a presentation reflecting on how\, at a time when we are politically moving away from Europe\, the struggles and pressures we are experiencing in the UK and the EU are closer than ever.  The cultural\, political\, social and economic circumstances of each project have generated unique responses and solutions that are useful to us all. \nFrom autonomous collectives and squats in Milan to municipally funded cultural spaces in Ghent and Zurich\, to intentional communities in Portugal and France – come and participate in the story of a growing movement that is fostering real systemic change and empowering community-led resurgence in the face of corporate gentrification and increasing capitalist hegemony. \nGeneral Tickets – £5.00\nPay What You Feel – £1.00\nhttps://ticketpass.org/event/ESKKWG-a-roadmap-of-resurgence

SUMMARY:Bristol Artist-Led Forum
DESCRIPTION:We believe Bristol artist-led initiatives are the vibrant\, ever-changing creative energy fueling this city. We also believe the DIY sector would perhaps benefit from a supportive\, organised\, peer-to-peer network. Keep it Simple and Give to Get is the motto! \nWe thought we could gather together\, Bristol artist-led people\, to discuss possible ways to collaborate\, and share skills\, ideas\, and best and worst practices\, in order to support each other rather than to compete. Our belief is that we are stronger when we are united\, clear in our aims\, confident in our shared resources and organised. A key aim of the Forum is to be in collective conversation\, and thus in a stronger negotiating position\, with local authorities\, funding bodies\, institutions\, and developers\, in order to find support and offer high-quality projects\, while preserving our vital independence. \nThis is the first event to get the ball rolling\, for us all meet and commune\, and to feel into our interests. \nSchedule of events: \n\n6.00 – 6.20 Arrival – Networking & vegan meal\n6.20 – 6.25 Housekeeping and Intro\n6.25 – 6 35 Warm up activity with artist Lisa Friedberg\n6.35 – 6.55 Presentation by Laura Bottin\n6.55 – 7.20 Channon Goodwin presents All Conference\, an example of a successful peer-to-peer artist-led network operating in Australia\n7.20 – 7.30 Q&A\n7.30 – 8.30 discussion\, working groups perhaps and possible action plan\n8.30 – 9.15 drinks and music at the venue\n\nA vegan meal will be provided\, although we suggest a £2.50 donation to cover costs. We will be running the bar throughout the event\, with some music on afterwards. \nThe event is free to attend\, if you’re keen to come along\, please book your place via Eventbrite so we have an idea of numbers for catering. \nWe very much hope to see many of you there 🙂\nCaroline\, Jack\, Jenny\, Laura\, Lisa

SUMMARY:Lift the Ban Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:A panel discussion as part of Student Action for Refugee’s Lift the Ban Campaign. We will be talking to five guests about their different perspectives on and experiences with the ban on asylum seekers working in the UK. The panel will include: \n\nThangam Debbonaire – Bristol West MP\nFleur Williams – Independent researcher\, who studies Migration and Mobility MSC also involved in freelance campaigning/policy work\nQerim Nuredini – Red Cross\nAhmed Bakaal – Activist\, and someone who has been impacted by the ban first hand\nJessie Seal – NACCOM (No Accommodation Network)\n\nLift the Ban is a campaign with the goal of gaining asylum seekers the right to work. Currently asylum seekers are not allowed to work in the UK and are left to struggle on an allowance of £5.39 per day. This means qualified people are unable to provide for themselves and their families and often are pushed into poverty. People seeking safety in our country are put into a state of limbo\, unable to fulfill their potential or assimilate into their new community. \nCome along to learn more about the impacts of this ban from a range of different perspectives\, and how we can fight it!

SUMMARY:Hostile Environment Book Launch with Maya Goodfellow
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Bristol book launch of Maya Goodfellow’s ‘Hostile Environment: How Immigrants Became Scapegoats’. \nAs refugees drowned in the Mediterranean\, the UK Government proudly announced that the aim of its immigration policy was to create a ‘hostile environment’ for undocumented immigrants. Despite study after study confirming that immigration is not damaging the economy or putting a strain on public services\, migrants continue to be blamed for all the UK’s ills. How did we get here? \nMaya Goodfellow offers a compelling answer and illuminates the dark underbelly of contemporary immigration policies. Talking to politicians\, immigration lawyers\, and immigrants themselves\, Goodfellow examines how the media and successive governments have created and fuelled anti-immigration politics over the last fifty years. Ultimately\, Hostile Environment reveals the distinct forms of racism and dehumanisation that result from these policies. Goodfellow’s book is a crucial reminder of the human cost to treating immigration as a problem. \nTickets available from Headfirst Bristol.

SUMMARY:Steal As Much As You Can: Bristol Launch w/ Nathalie Olah
DESCRIPTION:For many\, the 2010s have been a lost decade. \nTory austerity has created suffering for millions\, as well a generation beset with financial insecurity and crisis. Yet our TV\, film\, music\, art and literature have never looked so rich\, or so posh. During a period of immense struggle\, the experiences of the majority have been pushed to the margins of our collective culture by the legacy media and its satellite industries – making it hard\, if not impossible\, to challenge those in power. \nSteal as Much as You Can is the story of how this happened\, exploring the rise of affluence in mainstream storytelling\, and the corrosive effects of neoliberal and postmodern culture. By rejecting the established routines of achieving prosperity – and encouraging us to steal what we can from the establishment routes along the way – it offers hope to a bright and brilliant generation whose potential has suffered under these circumstances. A generation who\, through no fault of its own\, has become increasingly frustrated by our increasingly unequal society. \nTickets available from Headfirst Bristol.

SUMMARY:Hostile Environment in Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:HE is one of the of the most forgotten battlegrounds in the fight against the border industry. Many of the day to day functions of universities are intrinsically tied to the border industry and the direct threatening of migrants. \nThis session will involve experts and focus on how we should challenge this and build towards a liberated education space for all.

SUMMARY:Panel Discussion: 'Is Zero Suicide Achievable?'
DESCRIPTION:Shine On is a campaign all about working together to prevent suicide. Via a programme of activities\, talks\, events and other initiatives\, we hope to bring people together to help increase understanding about the complex issue of suicide and mental health. \n‘Zero Suicide’ is an aim; an aim to reduce the rate of suicide to zero. This goal has been pursued in a number of places worldwide\, with work taking place across communities and organisations to collaboratively tackle suicide and deliver a reduction in suicide rates. In some places\, at times\, a rate of zero suicides has been successfully achieved. This panel discussion will explore the concept of zero suicide and whether we can\, or should\, seek to achieve this goal. Members of the panel will include people with lived experience of mental health\, and mental health professionals. \nPlease note: this panel discussion will be chaired by a trained facilitator with their own lived experience of being bereaved by suicide. It is inevitable that there is likely to be discussion of potentially traumatic topics\, including bereavement\, suicide and self-harm. Please be aware of this if you are planning on attending. \nEntry is FREE but please register your space here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/shine-on-panel-discussion-is-zero-suicide-achievable-bristol-tickets-79694348943

SUMMARY:Data rights\, workers rights and the gig economy
DESCRIPTION:Bristol Transformed and Open Rights Group Bristol present an evening of thought provoking talks on data rights\, workers rights and the gig economy. After a contribution from each speaker\, we will have a panel discussion with opportunity for questions from the audience. \nData Access: how to protect worker rights in the gig economy\nJames Farrar\, Worker Info Exchange\nGig employers such as Uber and Deliveroo use a massive asymmetry in information power to both exploit workers and build powerful commercial networks. The workforce is atomised and kept in the dark so organising can be difficult. Accessing employment rights can be stymied if the worker cannot evidence management control that is hidden in algorithms kept behind the digital curtain. But provisions of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) provides important data access rights that will become increasingly important as the gateway for digital workers to secure worker rights. Join this discussion and learn how Worker Info Exchange is helping gig workers access\, aggregate and understand their personal data at work and how data is helping workers organise for a more just future. \nData Justice in the Workplace\nLina Dencik\, Data Justice Lab\nThe dual occurrences of constant data collection and use of artificial and autonomous systems in the workplace are having a profound impact on workers’ lives. Workers are subjected to constant surveillance that not only monitor worker productivity but factors unrelated to work. At the same time\, machine learning systems are using these data to transform how work is being allocated\, assessed and completed and as a result\, worker lives and value in the workplace. These systems are implemented with little discussion with workers about why it’s necessary\, what is being collected\, or how that information will be used. What rights do workers have to that information\, to ensure that data is collected fairly and accountably\, and how are they able to mediate\, circumvent or resist the implementation and uses of data? How does the idea of data justice manifest itself in the workplace? In this talk\, I will map some of the trends in data-driven technologies\, from hiring systems to performance assessment tools\, and discuss what this means for situating concerns with data as part of a workers’ rights agenda. \nSurviving insecurity and protesting injustice in the hidden gig economy\nAlex Wood\, Oxford Internet Institute\nHundreds of thousands of workers in the UK are part of a hidden global gig economy. These workers are using platforms to remotely undertake tasks such as translation\, transcription\, programming\, digital marketing\, graphic design and data entry for clients potentially located on the other side of the world. Despite usually working from their homes\, these workers are coming together to build communities to survive the insecurity inherent to the gig economy. This talk will explore the common grievances which platforms generate among these disparate workers and the emerging organisations and embryonic forms of action which workers are using to protest injustice in the hidden gig economy.

SUMMARY:Stolen w/ Grace Blakeley // Bristol Launch
DESCRIPTION:In the decade leading up to the 2008 financial crisis\, booming banks\, rising house prices and cheap consumer goods propped up living standards in the rich world. Thirty years of rocketing debt and financial wizardry had masked the deep underlying fragility of finance-led growth\, and in 2008 we were forced to pay up. \nThe decade since has witnessed all kinds of morbid symptoms\, as all around the rich world\, wages and productivity are stagnant\, inequality is rising\, and ecological systems are collapsing. \nStolen is a history of finance-led growth and a guide as to how we might escape it. We’ve sat back as financial capitalism has stolen our economies\, our environment and even the future itself. Now\, we have an opportunity to change course. What happens next is up to us. \nGrace Blakeley (New Statesman Economics Editor) will be in conversation discussing her new book. \nTickets available from Headfirst. If you can’t afford it but would like to come\, please get in touch with Bristol Transformed (details below)\, we may be able to arrange something for you.

SUMMARY:Book reading: Voices of Bristol: Gentrification & Us
DESCRIPTION:Henry Palmer grew up in the ward of Easton between 1998-2010. Back then\, the European Commission classed it one of the most deprived wards in the south west of England. When returning to Bristol in 2016\, however\, Henry was shocked to hear his old area being described as ‘up-and-coming’. Exploring why and what this meant led him to write a book on the gentrification of Bristol. The book explores its financial and cultural consequences\, points to real culprits deserving of our focus\, and puts forth solutions in the form of Central government policy change and the need for understanding. \nHenry will be attending\, along with others who’ve read the book\, though everyone is welcome to this night of empathetic discourse.

SUMMARY:The Bristol Cable present: Chav Solidarity with author D Hunter
DESCRIPTION:The Bristol Cable welcomes author D Hunter to present his book “Chav Solidarity” – “part autobiography\, part meditation on trauma\, class and identity\, part one finger salute into the face of respectability politics\, but mostly an articulation of the contradictory heart of Chavvy sh*t heads across the U.K”. \nHunter will read excerpts from the book\, as well as discussing it’s origins and surrounding issues. This will be followed by a question and answer session and open discussion regarding the issues raised in the book. \nHunter uses his experiences as child sex worker\, teenage crack addict\, violent thug and community activist to examine the ways in which our classed experiences shape the ways in which we think and do our politics. \nContent Warning: Throughout the book there are references to sexual violence\, racism (both interpersonal and institutional)\, gendered violence (physical\, psychological and verbal)\, various forms of physical violence\, suicide\, drug usage\, transphobia\, murder\, and police brutality. The subjects discussed in this event may reflect the book content. \nFree/donation tickets for members and £3 for non-members –  available here.

SUMMARY:National Food Service: what would decommodified food provision look like?
DESCRIPTION:Food is a basic human right and yet in this country around 500\,000 people are reliant on food banks. Food poverty is affecting our health and is affecting children’s quality of life and education. Food production is also critical to climate change processes and can be a tool through which we combat the destruction of our planet. \nRecognising the integral human rights to good health and education\, we have developed a decommodified National Health Service and a National Education Service; why does the UK not have a National Food Service? \nWhat would a National Food Service look like? How would it differ to our current system? How does the current system fail us and the planet? And importantly\, if we want a NFS how would we get there? \nTo answer all of these questions we have a panel of food activists who will also discuss their involvement in food production and provision. On the panel: Louise Delmege\, a volunteer for Foodhall community kitchen\, the people behind the push for a National Food Service; and more TBA.

SUMMARY:Marx at the Arcade: Consoles\, Controllers\, and Class
DESCRIPTION:In Marx at the Arcade (Haymarket Books)\, acclaimed researcher Jamie Woodcock delves into the hidden abode of the gaming industry. In an account that will appeal to hardcore gamers\, digital skeptics\, and the joystick-curious\, Woodcock unravels the vast networks of artists\, software developers\, and factory and logistics workers whose seen and unseen labor flows into the products we consume on a gargantuan scale. Along the way\, he analyzes the increasingly important role the gaming industry plays in contemporary capitalism and the broader transformations of work and the economy that it embodies. \nJamie Woodcock is a sociologist of work\, focusing on digital labor\, the gig economy\, and resistance. He is currently a fellow at the London School of Economics and is the author of the award-winning Working the Phones (2016). He is on the editorial board of Historical Materialism and an editor of Notes from Below\, an online journal of workers’ inquiry. \nTickets now available from Headfirst.

SUMMARY:McMindfulness
DESCRIPTION:From celebrity endorsements to monks\, neuroscientists and meditation coaches rubbing shoulders with CEOs at the World Economic Forum in Davos\, it is clear that mindfulness has gone mainstream. Some have even called it a revolution. But what if\, instead of changing the world\, mindfulness has become a banal form of capitalist spirituality that mindlessly avoids social and political transformation\, reinforcing the neo-liberal status quo? \nWriter + academic Ronald Purser will be joining us in conversation with Hettie O’Brien to debunk the so-called “mindfulness revolution”\, exposing how corporations\, schools\, governments and the military have co-opted it as technique for social control and self-pacification. \nTickets are £3 each\, available from Headfirst.

SUMMARY:Event Postponed - Pinkwashing: is Pride losing its meaning?
DESCRIPTION:Due to heat and travel issues this event has been postponed. To be rescheduled soon. \n***Public event: open to individuals of all orientations and genders*** \nDo the companies sponsoring Pride really care about LGBT+ rights?\nIs it all just for publicity?\nDoes it matter either way? \nThese are some of the questions we ask when we talk about ‘Pinkwashing’. Over the last few years we’ve seen supposedly progressive\, Pride-sponsoring companies fund anti-LGBT+ politicians\, deport LGBT+ migrants for the Home Office and enforce homophobic and transphobic policies within their own businesses. This raises the question for many of whether these companies truly support the LGBT+ community\, or whether they’re allies only when its profitable to be so. \nThis event aims to be an open discussion of these issues and more. Come along to find out more about Pinkwashing: what it is\, why it matters\, and if it is a problem\, how we can fight it. \n***ACCESSIBILITY***\nThis venue is accessible by wheelchair but does not have a wheelchair-accessible toilet. If you have specific questions about the venue please contact us.

SUMMARY:Land Rights and the Fight for Cultural Spaces - School of Activism
DESCRIPTION:Land Rights & the Fight for Cultural Spaces – Tales From The Front Line \nAll communities need space. Space to meet\, to learn\, to play\, to create and to share ideas. But today cultural venues all over Bristol are at risk of closure\, or already closing. \nFrom 4pm to 9pm on Saturday April 7th we will explore the issues that led to these problems and also look at some of the innovative ways people are finding to protect cultural spaces in these difficult times. \nFree Entry \n(The times listed below are subject to change as guests and activities are confirmed.) \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 4pm – Tales from Europe’s autonomous venues \nFrom June 2012 to Jan 2015 photographer Lisa Furness took a photographic tour of squats and protest sites around Europe. In this 20 minute presentation\, she takes you on a whirlind exploration of some of the most impressive creative and community projects she saw on her travels. \nA little taster of what can be done when a group of people get organised and get their hands on an unused building. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 4.30pm – Respace Projects Presentation \nThe ground-breaking group ReSpace Projects are heading down from London to share their experiences and successes in opening free community spaces in London and Peterborough. In the midst of a housing crisis and facing the loss hundreds of London’s cultural venues\, ReSpace projects achieved the impossible – they convinced a building developer to allow them free use of an old office block in Dalston while the building was awaiting planning permission – and at a stroke\, the Hive was born. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The Hive became a popular centre for all forms of underground and emerging artists and cultural projects. It was the meeting space for charities\, activists and community groups from all over the capital\, and it formed a central hub for all those interested in social action and cultural expression. \nSince then ReSpace projects have gone on to become a trusted name\, offering a bridge between activists and developers\, landlords and communities. They have supported projects in Highgate\, Romford and Southend on Sea\, and they recently opened a huge building in Peterborough\, discussing with the council a potential to open many more empty buildings if this project is a success. \nPRSC is delighted to be hosting their first trip to Bristol where they will share the innovative model that has allowed them to tap in to societies wasted resources and achieve so much positive change. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 5.30pm – Old Library Muller Road – a CAT Story \nAfter hearing of the closure of their local libary\, a team of neighbourhood volunteers went about trying to save it. \nThey went through the Community Asset Transfer process with Bristol City Council and they now have the building safely in community hands – guaranteed for the next few years. \nAs the Old Library on Muller Rd proves to be a real community asset\, bringing people together and providing a beautiful garden in a congested part of the city\, Debbora Hall talks us through how they did it. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n				  \n6pm – Antlers & Bricks – why a roving art gallery is settling down \nFounder and director of Antlers Gallery Jack Gibbon will share his experiences of running a nomadic gallery\, look at the pressures facing Bristol’s cultural spaces\, and will discuss the factors that led to his decision to start Bricks – an art space very much rooted in one place. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 6.30pm – Stokes Croft Land Trust \nPRSC introduces the Stokes Croft Land Trust. An ambitious attempt to move all the major cultural and community assets in stokes croft into the hands of the local community. Just in the early stages of development now\, PRSC will share the progress of the Trust so far and our vision for the Trust in the future. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 7pm – Round Table Discussion “The future of our community spaces and what we can do to protect them?” \n With Libraries\, community centres\, pubs\, music venues\, art galleries and artist studios all closing or feeling the pinch\, we ask what the future has in store for community spaces. All our guests are engaged in the ongoing battle to protect these spaces and following on from presenting their own experiences throughout the afternoon\, they will join a round table discussion on the tools available to (and the barriers blocking) campaigners and community groups who want to defend their cultural assets. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The School of Activism is a 2 week programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft over the Easter holidays (April 5 to 22). Given the actions over recent months its fantastic news to have their input and insight into the discussion.   \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n All welcome to this forum to discuss what radical changes need to be made to respond to the growing climate catastrophe . For hundreds of millions of people around the globe the devastating impact of climate change is happening now. It is no longer possible to talk about climate change as something happening in the future. It is leading to the destruction of our environment \, wildlife and a huge cost of human and animal life. \nWith Trump in the USA and Bolsanaro in Brazil opposing any form of action to tackle climate change and ploughing on with actions set to make thing worse the time for thinking and action to take on the powerful interests that block action is urgent. We aim to give plenty of time for peoples thoughts\, ideas and questions for all in attendance.

SUMMARY:Vulvanomics – How We Talk About Vaginas
DESCRIPTION:Sex Talks is incredibly excited and passionately grateful to be bringing Professor Emma L. E. Rees\, Director of the Institute of Gender Studies and bestselling author to Bristol\, under the Sex Talks umbrella. \nWhen you were growing up did you talk about ‘froo froos’\, ‘tuppences’\, or ‘lady gardens’? Or were ‘vaginas’ and ‘vulvas’ more commonly referred to? And what does it mean that when we say ‘the C-word’ we’re conjuring up generations of shame and taboo? And why do we say the phrase ‘the C-word’\, and not the word itself? (Cunt – there you go Sex Talks said it) \nEmma Rees is Professor of Literature and Gender Studies at the University of Chester\, and Director of the Institute of Gender Studies. She has written extensively in the field of gender and representation\, and her most recent book\, The Vagina: A Literary and Cultural History (Bloomsbury) came out in paperback early in 2015. \nIn Vulvanomics\, an informative\, sometimes light-hearted talk based on her book\, Emma considers the often surprising origins of how we talk about vaginas\, and why people have such a problem doing so in a candid way; she maps how advertising\, film-making and art have profited from the taboo of the vagina\, and how they even perpetuate ideas of ‘shame’. If we confront the taboo\, she argues\, we can also confront the real-world abuses it currently masks. \n45-minute talk\, followed by an opportunity for audience questions and discussion. As well as a fab chance to get your hands on one of these golden books.\, maybe even a signed one if you ask really nicely. \nTickets are £6.50 (Plus Tickets Ignite booking fee which supports the accessible arts) or concessions tickets available for students\, freelancers\, sex workers if you’re a member of a community action group Sex Talks supports for £4.

SUMMARY:Angela Davis: A Revolutionary Life
DESCRIPTION:The second in our series of events commemorating 1968. \nAngela Davis has been a revolutionary socialist since the 1960s. Active as a member of the Communist Party of the USA\, she opposed the Vietnam war and was notable for supporting the Civil Rights and Black Power struggles of the period. \nDavis is a lifelong anti-imperialist who played a prominent role in opposing the Iraq war in 2003 and who has consistently supported the Palestinians. \nMuch of her theoretical work has examined the relationship between different forms of oppression\, in particular the trinity of class\, gender and race. \nOver time her popularity has arguably grown. Her speech at the Washington Women’s march in January 2017 was watched by millions of people across the world. Her image as a revolutionary icon is constantly reproduced. \nCome and hear Counterfire activist and SOAS lecturer Feyzi Ismail present an introduction to Angela Davis’s life and politics. \nIn order to cover our costs we usually ask for £2/3 from those able to afford it.

Advertising has become so much a part of our lives that many of usdon’t question them\, and some people say they don’t notice the ads. This is what the advertisers want us to think – so they can carry on feeding us messages to consume\, spend or borrow\, without us even realising it. \nHow can we shift the debate on outdoor advertising so that we can become more aware of the impacts of corporate advertising we see on our streets\, and the damage to our health\, wellbeing\, environment and local economy? \nAdblock Bristol is a group challenging corporate outdoor advertising in Bristol. We want to make Bristol the first UK city to be free from corporate billboards. Sounds great\, doesn’t it? We need your help to make it happen. \nWe’ll explore how advertising works\, what impacts it has\, and why your favourite brand of beans may not be as special as you think. We’ll discuss how we can break through the barrage of consumer nonsense and expose the myths behind the advertising industry. \nLed by Nicola Round and Robbie Gillett. \nFriday 15 at 6.30pm – Artists Talk with Lisa Furness \nAcross the continent buildings and villages lie empty. Largely uncelebrated\, an international community of activists and anarchists makes use of these buildings to address all kinds of social or environmental ills and to engage in alternative ways of life. \nBetween 2012 and 2015 photographer Lisa Furness toured Europe and the UK making a visual record of the squatted communities and projects she found. In this talk she presents stories from some of the amazing places she saw. \nSat- Sun 16-17\, 11am – 3pm drop-in – Painting Workshop \nCome and paint with us. We have some paint\, brushes\, canvases\, boards\, etc. But you are welcome to you bring yours too. SUMMARY:Fighting the Cuts
DESCRIPTION:How do we fight back against the cuts? How do we get the word out about the damage that the Tories are forcing onto Bristol? \nBristol is facing a budget deficit of over £100 million by 2020. This current “graph of doom” means our Labour council is being forced by the Tories to make harsh cuts. Proposals include closing 17 out of the 27 libraries in Bristol\, and until recently the council tax reduction scheme for the poorest in the city. \nOur speakers include Esther Giles\, Bristol local campaign forum treasurer\, a speaker on the affect of the cuts\, and Ange Crossley (Secretary of Bristol East CLP).
