SUMMARY:Concrete Soldiers - Bristol Premiere
DESCRIPTION:Concrete Soldiers is a film by Nikita Woolfe about the social cleansing of London in the name of regeneration\, and about the tenants who are fighting back. Narrated by journalist and activist Andy Worthington\, who will be attending the screening and the Q&A session afterwards. \nThe film will also be accompanied by an exhibition on the London housing crisis from photographer Lisa Furness. \n‘Concrete Soldiers UK’ tells the story of the destruction of council estates\, the social cleansing of those who live there – and the inspiring resistance of tenants\, leaseholders and other committed to the ongoing existence and availability of social housing. \nTickets cost £4 and are available here: http://hdfst.uk/E46309 \nThe film focuses in particular on the Aylesbury Estate in Southwark\, where the destruction is already underway\, but is being challenged\, and Central Hill and Cressingham Gardens in Lambeth\, both threatened with destruction. In all three cases\, residents are fighting back\, and giving hope to others whose homes are threatened\, both in London and across the UK. \n“Three years ago I was looking at all the new developments in London and was surprised to see how much of the construction happened on old council estate land. \n“I started wondering why the councils wanted to sell off their valuable assets and whether there were alternatives … That’s how Concrete Soldiers UK began … \n“Three years later and ‘Concrete Soldiers UK’ is not only answering my questions but it has also become a film about the fighting spirit that I encountered on the way. \n“I was so impressed by people and their tireless campaigning in situations which often ended with a negative outcome. It’s easy to see why people would become discouraged and just give up. But some haven’t and some even managed to succeed in their campaigns. That’s what ‘Concrete Soldiers UK’ is all about.”\n– Nikita Woolfe \nWatch the trailer here: \nhttps://youtu.be/gjSTUe3oA6U \n

SUMMARY:Can We Do It Ourselves? - Bristol Premiere
DESCRIPTION:A Swedish film about economic democracy. \nAlongside this film screening\, PRSC welcomes Kat from the Bristol Cable to share the realities of cooperativism in Bristol today and Joel Lazarus from the Bristol Learning Coop about the possibilities of creating a cooperative college or university in the city. \nCan We Do It Ourselves focuses on economic philosophy with an emphasis on the concept of economic democracy. The film helps viewers understand the difference between a market economy in which consumer demand drives a company’s supply of goods and services\, and a capitalist economy in which private owners control production and hold a right to the profits. There is strong support for the potential promise of a democratic economic model in which workers have more of a say in business operations than either market or capitalist models. \nEntry costs £4. 25% of ticket dsales will be donated to the Bristol Cable and 25% donated to the Bristol Learning Co-op. \nBuy tickets here: http://hdfst.uk/E46306 \nInput from European and American economic experts as well as general consumers helps to unveil the complexities of these economic models by presenting the potential benefits and pitfalls of each. Many of the interview subjects argue in favor of greater democracy in the workforce\, highlighting a need to establish a system that emphasizes the importance of workers’ welfare. \nPolitical scientist Bo Rothstein argues that capitalism essentially sees workers selling themselves into slavery. Companies built around a workers’ cooperative\, however\, center more on the well-being of those providing labor over the maximization of profit. By making managers responsible to the workers\, instead of the other way around\, the quality of work improves. The driving philosophy in putting more power in the hands of the workers is that they will take more pride in what they’re doing when they are\, in essence\, working for themselves. \nJanerik Larsson\, former VP of the Confederation of the Swedish Enterprise\, is the primary voice of dissent throughout the film\, cautioning that proponents of a democratic economy are trying to make an ideology out of a reality that is too fluid and ever changing in nature. He claims that he has not seen effective\, practical economic democracy\, and weighs in favor of a market economy within a democratic society instead of an actual democratic economy. \nCan We Do It Ourselves calls into question the fact that democracy prevails in so many models of world politics\, yet not in economic spheres. By examining the key differences between market\, capitalist and democratic economies\, the filmmakers are able to present the many perceived benefits of empowering the working class and re-calibrating the scales of corporate influence.

SUMMARY:LIKE IT BENT
DESCRIPTION:SAVE BEARPIT presents a special evening \nLIKE IT BENT\nFeat: The Documentary ‘DON’T BUY IT and REBEL HOP’: With DJ FAT PAUL – AND OTHER HEROES also: A BIT OF TALK ABOUT THE ERASURE OF LOCAL CULTURE \n–\nWed 27 June // 19:30 \nTickets: Free Entry \n\nSynopsis: “Don’t Buy It” is a hastily made Freedom vs Fear mash-up from artist activist Katy Bauer. Using everything she could lay her hands on from William Blake to William Burroughs\, it’s an attempt to raise awareness and stop Bristol City Council siding with commerce and erasing a ragged\, vibrant\, independent way of life as starkly displayed in The Bearpit. \n“Ironing out the edges in favour of so-called safety is the beginning of the end for liberty. Always has been. The Greedheads want ALL the space. Always have done. I don’t think the Council has ever considered where the interesting stuff in life comes from. They think you can manufacture it in some squared away office\, but you can’t. It’s a wild thing that grows out of shit. Just like Roses. And what’s this Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) rubbish about? Dispersing people if more than three are gathered in a public space. They’re not doing that in Clifton Village.” Bauer 2018
