SUMMARY:BARC Open House: Re-Visions of Abolition
DESCRIPTION:Join Bristol Anti-Repression Campaign for a screening and discussion of Re-Visions of Abolition: Abolition Past\, Present and Future. \nThe 55 minute film documents the recent history of the prison abolition movement in the US through the organizing efforts of Critical Resistance and explores the meaning of abolitionist politics. By focusing on the collaboration between Critical Resistance Los Angeles Chapter and A New Way of Life\, and seeing how ongoing abolitionist work draws from other liberation movements\, this film unfolds visions of abolition as an ongoing struggle for freedom from destructive carceral systems. \nWe’ll then have a very relaxed discussion of the film.

SUMMARY:No Bigots\, No Binaries – how can we win LGBT+ liberation?
DESCRIPTION:A new generation of LGBT+ people are out—to take on the system. \nThe Tories are ramping up their war on trans and non-binary people. Rishi Sunak blocking Scotland’s GRA reforms is a threat to trans rights across Britain—and part of a right wing backlash against LGBT+ people. \nIt’s not just in Britain. Whether it’s in Italy or Hungary\, far right governments are attacking LGBT+ people under the guise of “gender ideology”. \nUganda’s government recently passed a vicious homophobic law\, building on the legacy of the British Empire. \nLGBT+ oppression is ingrained throughout society\, but it hasn’t always existed. It’s rooted in the development of capitalism and the nuclear family\, and bigoted ideas are pushed from the top of society. \nIn Britain\, we’ve also seen resistance. The Tories blocking Scottish GRA reforms was met by a wave of resistance\, with young and militant protests from London to the Scottish islands. And the vigils for Brianna Ghey brought thousands more onto the streets. \nThe movement has thrown up huge questions—whether it’s about the roots of oppression\, identity politics\, or strategies to win liberation. \nJoin us to discuss where LGBT+ oppression comes from and how we can win liberation.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Friends of Israel
DESCRIPTION:Book a FREE ticketBristol Transformed welcomes Hil Aked to discuss their new book “Friends of Israel: The Backlash against Palestinian Solidarity”\, due to be published by Verso in mid-April. \n‘Friends of Israel provides a forensically researched account of the activities of Israel’s advocates in Britain\, showing how they contribute to maintaining Israeli apartheid. The book traces the history and changing fortunes of key actors within the British Zionist movement in the context of the Israeli government’s contemporary efforts to repress a rising tide of solidarity with Palestinians expressed through the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. Offering a nuanced and politically relevant account of pro-Israel actors’ strategies\, tactics\, and varying levels of success in key arenas of society\, it draws parallels with the similar anti-boycott campaign waged by supporters of the erstwhile apartheid regime in South Africa. \n‘By demystifying the actors involved in the Zionist movement\, the book provides an anti-racist analysis of the pro-Israel lobby which robustly rebuffs anti-Semitic conspiracies. Sensitively and accessibly written\, it emphasises the complicity of British actors – both those in government and in civil society. Drawing on a range of sources including interviews with leading pro-Israel activists and Palestinian rights activists\, documents obtained through Freedom of Information requests and archival material\, Friends of Israel is a much-needed contribution to Israel/Palestine-related scholarship and a useful resource for the Palestine solidarity movement.’ (Verso Books) \nBook your free ticket on Headfirst »

SUMMARY:The People's Comedy: in Solidarity with The Bristol Cable
DESCRIPTION:TicketsThe Bristol Cable and The People’s Comedy share a lot in common. We both believe profoundly in the power of collectivism and working together. The Bristol Cable launched in 2014 as an alternative media platform\, owned by its members with stories suggested by them too. In a similar vein\, The People’s Comedy launched as an alternative to commercialized comedy (the kind that markets itself to vast audiences at the expense of substance)\, and to be a platform for the evocative and daring\, whilst also ensuring that all acts are paid. \nWe are honoured and appreciative that The Bristol Cable are helping to sponsor our February night\, meaning that we can boost the pay that we give to our comedians whilst welcoming the company of some The Bristol Cable members on the evening. It will also be an opportunity to raise awareness of the Stokes Croft Land Trust\, which you can buy into if you’d like to own a bit of Stokes Croft! https://dev.prsc.org.uk/sclt/ \nThe Bristol Cable:\n✔️ Awarded the 2019 British Journalism Award for local journalism\n✔️ Shortlisted for the 2020 Orwell Foundation Prize\n✔️ So much more available here: https://thebristolcable.org/join/?joinbutton=headerclick – why not join them for a few quid a month? \nThe People’s Comedy:\n✔️ Nominated for best themed night in the UK in 2020 (Chortle)\n✔️ Raised thousands of pounds for grass-roots comedians\n✔️ Respected and loved by audiences and acts alike \nDoors & bar open at 7.00pm\, show starts promptly at 7.30pm. \nLineup includes:\nDonna Landy\nKate Martin\nOmari Douglas\nKatie Price\nKitty Messalina\nVanessa Hammock\n& MC\, Brendan Common \nFor more info about us\, visit www.thepeoplescomedy.org \n* Please note that this event is being photographed\, so if you would like to avoid being in any photos\, please just email us at email hidden; JavaScript is required

SUMMARY:Workers Can Win – Book tour & workshop
DESCRIPTION:TicketsJoin Bristol Transformed for an afternoon with Ian Allinson\, who’s been taking his new book “Workers Can Win” up and down the country to inspire new organisers and give them the tools they need to win working-class power. We’ll be asking Ian how the book came about\, what’re the most important lessons he’s learnt\, and what even is organising anyway? Following the conversation with Ian\, you’ll take part in a workshop that will give you a taste of some of the ideas and techniques from the book and get you thinking about how you can take them forwards into your own workplace. The event will end with an opportunity to ask Ian and other experienced organisers anything you’ve ever wanted to know about moving your colleagues to action and winning at work. \nThe Covid\, climate\, and cost of living crises all hang heavy in the air. It’s more obvious than ever that we need radical social and political change. But in the vacuum left by defeated labour movements\, where should we begin? For Ian\, the answer is clear: organizing at work is essential to rebuilding working-class power. The premise is simple: organizing builds confidence\, capacity\, and collective power – and with power\, we can win change. Workers Can Win is an essential\, practical guide for rank-and-file workers and union activists. \nWe ask attendees to give £4 that goes towards our costs of the event. If you feel unable to afford that but still wish to attend please get in touch and we’ll happily send you a ticket. \nTickets available from Headfirst.

SUMMARY:Bristol Gentrification presents: Is Bristol destined to become gentrified? + trippy Greek Symposium style after party
DESCRIPTION:TicketsIn simple terms\, gentrification is the migration of a higher socio-economic class of people into an area that traditionally housed those from a lower socio-economic class background. Across the UK\, the more inner-city you go\, the higher the influx of more affluent people you’ll find\, encouraged by job and investment opportunities\, amenities\, convenience\, and everything in-between. If you know Bristol\, think about how Easton\, Bedminster\, St Pauls etc. are changing and you have an idea of gentrification already. \nAlthough there are sometimes “positives” that result from gentrification\, such as lower crime rates\, cleaner areas\, regenerated buildings\, the bad always outweighs the good. It necessarily always has done so since it was first conceived in the early 60s by Islington sociologist Ruth Glass. \nThe phenomenon is mostly caused by the affordable housing endemic that our country faces\, and results in social ills such as: homelessness\, which is set to increase by a 1/3rd by 2024 (66\,000 more people than today – ref.1); unaffordable exclusion zones or “exclusionary displacement” (ref.2); the direct displacement of social housing residents (ref.3); cultural alienation that leads to residents moving away (ref.4)\, increased inequality and much else besides. \nBristol was the 5th most expensive place to live in the UK last year (Zoopla)\, and the uncivilized statistics above increasingly plague our city due to private developer greed\, neoliberal government policies and inept politicians. \nCome along and hear: \n★ Personal testimonials witnessing the change in St Pauls – Lawrence Hoo (poet)\n★ Bristol as part of the national picture – Vicky Spratt (i’s Housing Correspondent; author Tenants: Stories of Britain’s Housing Shame)\n★ The role that social housing can play – Matthew Buckham (Communities Director\, Sovereign Housing)\n★ How is Bristol fighting back? – Cllr. Tom Renard (Bristol’s Cabinet Member for Housing)\n★ and speakers from the Stokes Croft Land Trust \nWith questions and discussion then being opened to the floor/discussion panellists. \nEvent by BristolGentrification.\nChaired by Henry Palmer\, author of Voices of Bristol: Gentrification & Us (2019) \nActions from the event:\n★ Donations for PRSC / support PRSC in other way (suggestions tbc)\n★ Join a union (with suggestions and how tbc)\n★ Vote for the right policies/sign and share petitions lobbying your local representative (with suggestions tbc)

SUMMARY:Artificial Islands: Book Launch with Owen Hatherley
DESCRIPTION:TicketsBristol Transformed are very pleased to have the wonderful Owen Hatherley back in Bristol for a chat and Q+A to launch his new book\, Artificial Islands: Adventures in the Dominions. \nGreat Britain has just left one Union. But might the island’s future lie in another Union altogether\, with its former colonial “kith and kin” in a trans-oceanic super-state with Canada\, Australia and New Zealand? \nWelcome to the strange world of the “CANZUK Union”\, the name for a quixotic but apparently serious plan to reunify the white-majority “Dominions” of the British Empire under the flag of low taxes\, strong borders and climate change denialism. \nArtificial Islands tests this idea that Britain’s closest relations are in these three countries in North America and the South Pacific\, through a thorough investigation of the townscapes and buildings of several cities within “CANZUK”. In this settler zone we can find some of the most purely modern landscapes in the world — British-designed cities that were built with extreme rapidity in forcibly seized territories on the other side of the world\, created specifically to make the colonisers feel at home. \nThis book uncovers the secret histories of nineteenth- and twentieth-century British architecture in the Dominions — from Neo-Gothic cathedrals and parliaments\, to rows of terraces and suburbs of semis\, Edwardian baroque museums and classical war memorials\, right up to post-war high-rise estates and Brutalist experiments. \nTickets from Headfirst »

DESCRIPTION:TicketsA workshop from the Ella Baker School of Organising… \nNo movement for social justice ever won without the actions of masses of people; if we are to become a movement for social justice\, then we need to cascade ideas on to others. \nThis day\, the 19th of September\, would have been the 101st birthday of Paulo Freire\, the revolutionary brazilian educator who formulated a lot of the theory which todays activist education is based on. \nThe aim of this session is to build participants’ confidence in delivering training materials\, and share their appreciation of the theory of learning to new people. \nEveryone is welcome\, entry is pay-what-you-can – donations for the venue would be appreciated\, but no-one will be turned away through lack of funds. \nRegister in advance for your ticket\, or just show up on the night! \n\nPeople's Art Fair: Friday 16 September - Sunday 24 September 2022\nThe People's Art Fair encompasses a group exhibition\, performances\, creative workshops & activities\, and a makers market!
