SUMMARY:No Great Crime: Bristol's Arresting Art
DESCRIPTION:Opening night: Thursday 22 July\, 6-10pm\nOpening hours: Tuesday – Sunday\, 12-6pm \nWhen we first talked about hosting this show at the People’s Republic of Stokes Croft\, we thought of it as a fringe event to the Vanguard exhibition at M Shed. Of course\, it’s not an official fringe show\, but with Vanguard exploring the council approved\, sanitised side of street art we thought it was a good opportunity to focus on the illegal roots of graffiti in Bristol. \nSince our inception in 2006\, PRSC has worked with all kinds of artists\, and seen many pieces illegally painted out with no justification or apology from the Council or Bristol Waste; we’ve seen the waste company make decisions about what should be kept and what should be buffed out\, and we’ve heard multiple stories of graffiti writers being stopped by the police when painting spots which officers from the same force have happily watched being painted many times before. Collectively we’ve spent hundreds of hours trying to convince the council that they should have some kind of policy to provide any kind of clarity\, but to no avail. \nSo\, what’s it actually like to paint on the streets of Bristol? With one hand the city provided its museum to Banksy (for what turned out to be their most successful exhibition ever) and with the other\, it harasses and criminalises his contemporaries\, upcoming artists and the very scene that spawned him. \nNo Great Crime: Bristol’s Arresting Art brings together a range of street artists and graff writers to show their diverse and inspiring work\, to tell their stories and to kickstart a conversation about how this city treats people engaged in its most famous art form. Some striking and beautiful pieces of Bristol street art\, including some from the PRSC’s own archives\, will be displayed alongside testimonials from local street artists about the realities of painting the Bristol streets\, and their brushes with the law. \nFeaturing art and stories from gHOSTbOY\, John D’oh\, Oshii\, Mike22\, Ryder\, Sepr\, Sickboy\, Skank\, T-Rex\, Tom Miller and more.

SUMMARY:Invented Futures: Speculation\, Visionaries and Modern Mythologies
DESCRIPTION:*** All School of Activism 2.0 events will be held online ***\nBook Tickets\nJoin Invented Futures to revisit the ways speculative thinking\, experimental writing\, manifestos\, magazines\, essays\, online forums\, fictions and modern mythologies have created\, transformed and rendered new futures\, formerly impossible technologies\, counter-cultural tech utopias and\, ultimately\, our dominant culture. \nThroughout the history of emerging tech\, as well as the reflections on how we live alongside it\, there’s been slippages between fiction and reality. From Ada Lovelace\, to Ted Nelson and Stewart Brand\, through to Donna Haraway\, Octavia Butler\, William Gibson and Marshall McLuhan\, our technological future has been collectively divined and metabolised by visionary thinkers. \nThe space between the early 1960s to the 1990s saw computers transform in our collective imagination from dehumanising machines of control into tools for a new shared digital utopia. But what instruments of speculation do we have now? And if the medium is still the message\, where does that leave our own capacity to continue to invent futures? \nInvented Futures is a collective that tears apart the narratives that fuel the development of new technology. We take a look at how tech innovation has got to where it is by examining how the role of speculative thinking can show us how there are alternatives to given tech cultures – through fictions\, design\, philosophies\, experimental AI systems and human-computer interactions that can uncover ‘possible worlds’. \nTickets available now from Headfirst. The suggested donation of £4 will help us keep the School of Activism as accessible & low-cost as possible\, £8 will subsidise a ticket for someone else – but no-one turned away through lack of funds!\n\nThe School of Activism 2.0 is a two week programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft over the Easter holidays. SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Tech Manifesto Writing Workshop for Young People
DESCRIPTION:*** All School of Activism 2.0 events will be held online ***\nBook Tickets\nWE REGET TO INFORM YOU THAT DUE TO UNFORSEEN CIRCUMSTANCES THIS WORKSHOP HAS BEEN CANCELLED.\nThe Invented Futures tall at 1.15pm today is still going ahead. See here: http://hdfst.uk/E63940 \nA creative workshop for young people that explores the use of manifestos\, experimental writing and political action to transform society’s relationship with technology. \nAt the moment\, there’s a feeling of distrust in big tech\, which creates an opportunity for young people to rewrite the rules. The manifesto has been used as a political tool throughout major turning points in the history of collective action. Political parties from all factions\, of course\, use them as a way of setting out policies. But manifestos have also been used by art movements and citizens alike to demonstrate against dominant systems. \nUsing famous examples through history\, from A Cyborg Manifesto to the writings of tech workers globally\, we’ll explore how artists\, writers\, activists and citizens have taken the future into their own hands by making demands on technology and society through creative practice. \nThen\, we’ll ask what questions you want to channel into your own tech manifesto: Why is discrimination embedded within data and automation? How can we take back the tech in our pockets? What is your view on social media and socialising? Do you think about the impact of increasing surveillance? \nAll you need is a pen and paper! \nInvented Futures is a collective that tears apart the narratives that fuel the development of new technology. We take a look at how tech innovation has got to where it is by speculating about alternatives to given tech cultures – through fictions\, design\, philosophies\, experimental AI systems and human-computer interactions that can uncover ‘possible worlds’. \nTickets available now from Headfirst. SUMMARY:Rebel History: The Struggle to Reclaim Our Past
DESCRIPTION:*** All School of Activism 2.0 events will be held online ***\nBook Tickets\nJoin poet Lawrence Hoo\, mentorist Michael Barnes-Wynters\, author Mike Manson and publisher Richard Jones in a discussion around what history we choose to tell and who gets to tell it.   \nWhat do you know about British history? Is it just a dusty list of kings and queens? A study of corn laws\, industrial revolution and empire\, with the occasional plague thrown in for variety? As we all know\, history is written by the winners so the history of rebellion\, civil disobedience and protest only ever gets a mention in the text books when a movement is so successful that it changes the cultural paradigm. \nThere is another history. One which shares stories from the powerless\, the excluded\, and those who fought injustice and got beaten down. This history is collected and shared by those who are passionate about our cultural memory and who refuse to allow history’s winners to be sole guardians of our story of the past. \nWhen Colston toppled into the water last summer\, this was a single decisive act in an ongoing public battle over our city’s history\, The protesters were demanding that we reconsider which people the city celebrates and who’s stories we tell. This is part of a deeper question about how Bristol – which prides itself on diversity and cultural expression – faces up to the brutalities of our past. Only time will tell how history will record Colston’s swim in the harbour\, as a natural step towards a more inclusive representation of Bristol’s past or as a moment of vandalism by a rowdy mob\, but we all have a part to play in choosing the stories that are told and remembered within our culture. \nLocal organisations such as Cargo and the Bristol Radical History Group dedicate themselves to ensuring that the history of struggle for social justice and equality is remembered and that\, as a culture we don’t hide from the darker stories of our past. \n\n7pm – screening of a 10 minute film called ‘Battling for Bristol’ by Colin Thomas of the Bristol Radical History Group – following 150 years of protest movements in the city\n7.15pm – 30 min talk on the story of the Bristol Bridge Riot of 1793 from Richard Jones of Tangent Books and Mike Manson author of the book Riot\n7.45pm – 30 min talk from poet Lawrence Hoo about his latest project Cargo Movement\, why it exists\, what it is trying to do\, and why reclaiming history is so important\n8.15pm – 15 min break (for the smokers\, tea addicts & those with weak bladders)\n8.30pm – 30 min talk from Michael Barnes-Wynters about his cultural history project Dutty Lingo and how it was inspired by the riots that followed Mark Duggan’s death in 2011\n9-9.30pm – Q&A session / round table discussion on the importance of representation and remembering our past. This discussion will kick off with the question What did it mean when Colston’ statue hit the water?\n\nTickets available now from Headfirst. The suggested donation of £4 will help us keep the School of Activism as accessible & low-cost as possible\, £8 will subsidise a ticket for someone else – but no-one turned away through lack of funds! \nFeatured image is a photo of an installation by street photographer Colin Moody which featured at the People’s Art Fair in September 2020. \n\nThe School of Activism 2.0 is a two week programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft over the Easter holidays. The workshops are intended to be empowering experiences equipping people with the tools to challenge the status quo\, contest power structures and ultimately to change the world.\nWe learn by doing.\nWe make our own future.\n\n\n\nSchool of Chativism\n\nIf you're feeling hyped about all this educating\, and you wanna connect with other SoA students to talk about what you've learnt\, and/or discuss the future of ethical social media\, then this is for you... \n\n"The School of Chativism is an experimental social media space that will run for the duration of the School of Activism 2.0. SUMMARY:Art for Social Change
DESCRIPTION:*** All School of Activism 2.0 events will be held online ***\nBook Tickets\nWhen done well\, art can give voice to the voiceless and bring visibility to those that are hidden. Art is a powerful tool to change the world. \nPhotographers Anthony Luvera and Rory Carnegie have both created fascinating collaborative projects in partnership with rough sleepers. \nIn his project Assembly Anthony Luvera invited people experiencing homelessness to use disposable cameras and audio recorders to document their experiences and things they are interested in. Anthony also worked with participants to create Assisted Self-Portraits in places significant to the individual. \nHis exhibition Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) was exhibited at the PRSC last winter. It featured questions about homeless provision sent to hundreds of councils across the UK and responses received from the councils. This exhibition was made in partnership with the Museum of Homelessness and FAQ was previously shown at Tate Liverpool. \nImages from FAQ exhibition & workshops at PRSC November 2019 \nFor his project ICON\, Rory Carnegie teamed up with the charity Crisis\, and arts centre The Old Fire Station in Oxford to reproduce iconic British photographs with homeless people as models. PRSC is working with Rory & the Old Fire Station to bring the ICON exhibition to Bristol. \nIn 2002 Rory worked with young asylum seekers in Oxford\, helping them to produce images & text exploring their experiences and exhibiting the results in the entrance space at Modern Art Oxford. \nHomeless people recreate a classic Beatles image for Rory’s ICON project \nIn this evening\, Rory and Anthony will present these projects\, discuss the experiences they had making this work and share the principles and priorities which led to them creating such important work. \nThis talk will look at the way that artists can choose to empower or diminish their subjects\, the way that power relationships between artist and subject can either reinforce or challenge current inequalities\, and at the responsibility that artists have to consider the impact of their work in the wider social context. \nTickets available now from Headfirst. The suggested donation of £4 will help us keep the School of Activism as accessible & low-cost as possible\, £8 will subsidise a ticket for someone else – but no-one turned away through lack of funds! \n\nThe School of Activism 2.0 is a two week programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft over the Easter holidays. SUMMARY:Know Your Rights: Vehicle Dwelling and the Law
DESCRIPTION:*** All School of Activism 2.0 events will be held online ***\nBook Tickets\nVehicle dwelling has been considered a part of Bristol’s diverse culture for a while. It has also been suggested in the media that there has been an increase in “vehicle dwelling” in recent years. While this is largely unknowable\, one thing we do know for certain is that new enforcement measures have been rolled out in response to this. \nBristol City Council attempted to take out a “Possession Order” and “Injunction” in a significant part of the city last summer. This would have effectively banned all people from living in vehicles in the area. We are also anticipating new “anti-trespass” legislation at a national level\, which could further impact the freedom of movement of everyone\, especially those living in vehicles. \nIt is important that all vehicle dwellers – or any others interested – are aware of these local and national policies\, as well as the actions being taken to manage and contest these policies. \nTwo representatives from Bristol Vehicles for Change (VfC) will outline the basic mechanics of these new policies. We will explain how vehicle dwellers have come together to contest enforcement in Bristol\, and how we may move forward in this context. \nVfC is an organisation formed to protect and advance the rights and place of vehicle dwellers in Bristol. For more info visit www.bristolvehiclesforchange.co.uk \nTickets available now from Headfirst. SUMMARY:Video and Activism
DESCRIPTION:*** All School of Activism 2.0 events will be held online ***\nBook Tickets\nFilms and discussion from the activist video creation project at Base. \nBase is a self-organised space in Easton (formerly knows as Kebele). Among other projects it is home to a group of activists who are currently busy turning activist leaflets and zines into videos that can be shared and accessed by a much wider audience. \nThis hour long session will feature two short videos from the team\, followed by Q&As. \n5pm Video As Communicative Tool For Activism\n10 min video followed by Q&A \nSelf created video with informative or educational content can make activism and campaigning more effective\, yet the most used form of communication in self-organised spaces are leaflets\, zines and posters. Much of that messaging – with anything as short as a zine – can be done using video. \nThe effort to create a video is about the same as creating leaflets and zines. The text on a leaflet or zine can be voiced\, accompanied by imagery that assists the spoken text. The physical set up is complete with a camera\, a device that can record voice and a device that can download and run a basic video editor. \nThis short film will share the aims and practices of the video creation project and an invitation to come and join in. \n5.30 Self-organized Spaces And The Example Base Social Center Bristol\n10 min video followed by Q&A \nBASE is run on a number of core principles\, which reflect the sort of world BASE members want to see and help bring into reality. It is these principles which make BASE a radical social centre. Instead of waiting for that ever far away big moment of revolution\, or for leaders and authorities to sort out our problems\, we recognise that we can make fundamental changes here and now\, in the ways we organise\, communicate\, interact and take action. This is the everyday revolution. BASE aims to be a living example\, albeit on a small scale\, of other possibilities. \nThis short film will share the experiences of working in a self-organised space and will be followed by a Q&A discussion after. What next for working class politics and revolutionary strategy? \n“We will talk about the large logistical and industrial backyard of the metropolis. About the reasons we moved there to get rooted. We will talk about slow-downs and overtime strikes in warehouses and frustrations at factory gates at five in the morning. About our workmates from Katowice and Jalandhar. About the impact of Brexit and zero-hour contracts. \nWe will share our experiences with our solidarity network\, an IWW organising drive and campaigns to stop local libraries from closing. We will talk about being union reps in two big unions and the limits we found. \nWe will make proposals about working class strategy and revolution. \nWe will also discuss our organising experiences in relation to the current attacks: the increase in legal repression (‘Kill the Bill’\, police repression in Italy and Greece) and the widespread ‘fire and rehire’ tactics to cut jobs and wages. These are two aspects of the same attack.” \nTickets available now from Headfirst. This is the place to discuss and share events at SOA2. But it's also a space for questioning what social media currently is\, and what it could be\, for activists and activism. We can remake it as we go\, transform it throughout SOA2.“ \n\nJoin the conversation »

SUMMARY:Monopsony Capitalism Book Launch with Ashok Kumar
DESCRIPTION:This book explores the combination of capital’s changing composition and labour’s subjective agency to examine whether the waning days of the ‘sweatshop’ have indeed begun. Focused on the garment and footwear sectors\, it introduces a universal logic that governs competition and reshapes the chain. By analysing workers’ collective action at various sites of production\, it observes how this internal logic plays out for labour who are testing the limits of the social order\, stretching it until the seams show. By examining the most valorised parts of underdeveloped sectors\, one can see where capital is going and how it is getting there. These findings contribute to ongoing efforts to establish workers’ rights in sectors plagued by poverty and powerlessness\, building fires and collapses. With this change and a capable labour movement\, there’s hope yet that workers may close the gap.
