SUMMARY:CANCELLED: School of Activism – Ackroyd & Harvey: The Art Of Activism
DESCRIPTION:This event is now CANCELLED.\nDOORS 6:30pm / FILM from 7pm / Informal discussion from 8:30pm \nWhen does practice become protest? Or protest\, poetry? \nAward-winning documentary filmmaker Fiona Cunningham-Reid presents an intimate portrait of internationally acclaimed artists Heather Ackroyd and Dan Harvey\, who work at the intersection of art\, activism\, biology and ecology. \nUncompromisingly preoccupied with the climate and ecological crisis\, Ackroyd & Harvey’s work has become a rallying cry for the environmental movement\, winning them international acclaim and a global following. With some of their pieces standing in prestigious galleries and others embedded in nature\, their work not only references the natural world\, but also regularly employs it. The film offers singular access into the lives\, work and partnership of the artists\, and their quest to shake humanity into action on climate catastrophe – whatever the personal cost – including their collaboration with Extinction Rebellion\, and co-founding the movement Culture Declares Emergency. \nMeticulous and thoughtful\, this careful study of a lifelong creative partnership asks questions of where art and hope – and love – stand in our very uncertain world. \nThis film contains flickering or flashing lights that may affect those with photosensitive epilepsy. \nPresented by PRSC’s School of Activism. \nEntry requirements: no age restrictions \n\nEnabling Active Citizenship since 2019\nCurated and hosted by PRSC\, School of Activism events are designed to be empowering experiences equipping people with the tools to challenge the status quo\, contest power structures and ultimately to change the world.\nWe learn by doing.\nWe make our own future.

SUMMARY:School of Activism presents: Fires & Fascism
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\n\n\nPRSC’s School of Activism presents: Fires & Fascism \nDOORS @ 7pm // Screening from 7:30pm // Q&A with the filmmaker from 8:45pm – all tickets £5 \nFIRES AND FASCISM is a new 57-min documentary shows the wildfires in Europe are more than just climate change and mismanagement. It links the increasing wildfires of Europe with past fascism\, big business\, organised crime\, and the rise of the far right. It showcases how communities are engaging in direct action\, protest\, rewilding\, and suppressing the rise of uncontrollable fires and the far right through direct actions. \nThe experiences and actions of 25 people across Greece\, Italy\, Spain\, and Portugal feature\, ranging between scientists\, teachers\, artists\, gardeners\, engineers\, winemakers\, NGOs\, and authors. \nDr Pete Knapp\, the filmmaker\, has a background in air quality and shifted careers from academia to storytelling. The reason for making the film is to reduce modern day fascism that capitalises on any crisis\, which are wildfires in this case. It aims to start the conversation on what we do about the rise of fascism today. \nSept 29th @ PRSC! \nEntry requirements: no age restrictions \n\n\n\nEnabling Active Citizenship since 2019\nCurated and hosted by PRSC\, School of Activism events are designed to be empowering experiences equipping people with the tools to challenge the status quo\, contest power structures and ultimately to change the world.\nWe learn by doing.\nWe make our own future.

SUMMARY:School of Activism Presents: Framing Agnes
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nScreening of ‘Framing Agnes’\, followed by a casual discussion\, as part of PRSC’s monthly School of Activism film screening series.\nWe will be fundraising for local trans healthcare initiatives at the event – bring cash! (if that is a thing you have) \n“Agnes\, the pioneering\, pseudonymized transgender woman who participated in Harold Garfinkel’s gender health research at UCLA in the 1960s\, has long stood as a figurehead of trans history. \nIn this rigorous cinematic exercise that blends fiction and nonfiction\, director Chase Joynt explores where and how her platform has become a pigeonhole. Framing Agnes endeavours to widen the frame through which trans history is viewed — one that has remained too narrow to capture the multiplicity of experiences eclipsed by Agnes’s. \nThrough a collaborative practice of reimagination\, an impressive line-up of trans stars (Zackary Drucker\, Angelica Ross\, Jen Richards\, Max Wolf Valerio\, Silas Howard\, and Stephen Ira) take on vividly rendered\, impeccably vintage re-enactments\, bringing to life groundbreaking artifacts of trans health care. \nJoynt’s signature form-rupturing style radically re-envisions the imposition of the frame on the cultural memory of transness through his brilliantly crafted\, communally driven excavation. SUMMARY:Soundtrack to a Coup D'etat - Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nA collaboration between the People’s Republic of Stokes Croft’s ‘School of Activism’ and the PRALER Fund\, marking the unveiling of a mural for Afrikan Liberation Day.\nIn the film\, Jazz and decolonisation are entwined in this historical rollercoaster that rewrites the Cold War episode that led musicians Abbey Lincoln and Max Roach to crash the U.N security council in protest against the murder of Congolese leader Patrice Lumumba. Crackling with energy and verve\, this masterful film takes history and creates an audacious musical documentary. \nThis year marks the centenaries of both Patrice Lumumba and Malcolm X\, and we want to commemorate their legacies by building solidarity with the decolonial struggles of today\, such as the one currently taking place in the Sahel region in West Afrika. We will be raising contributions for the PRALER Fund (https://www.praler.net/praler-fund)\, a grassroots effort led by Global South Communities of Resistance that are restituting resources to strengthen struggles for national liberation.

SUMMARY:School of Activism: A movement of movements for Bristol?
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nBristol is a city full of energy and vibrant alternative initiatives\, but they don’t always connect well together. The idea of a ‘movement of movements’ suggests that organizing might to scale out and scale up if it is to be able to address the polycrisis that faces us\, but for many organizers it is scale that is the problem. Ideas such as prefiguration\, horizontalism\, localism and so on tend to focus on the small and specific and to be suspicious of political parties\, the state and established institutions. In this event we want to think about longer term strategic aims and wider social transformation. Is it possible to think about the Bristol city region ecosystem in ways that are more strategic and systemic? Can we co-ordinate our activities so that the many local and particular forms of activism can become a rising tide of change which is impossible to ignore? \nJoin us for an evening of discussion with academics\, activists and local groups. Although entry is free\, capacity is limited\, so please get a ticket to secure your place. \nTimings:\n5 :30 pm Food for voluntary donation. The evening will start with early with food for those who want to come\, eat and meet like-minded others.\n6:30 pm Panel Discussion\n7.30 pm Audience discussion with members from local groups \nGuest Panel Speakers: \nRodrigo Nunes\, University of Essex \nA senior lecturer in political theory and organisaton at the University of Essex and the author of Neither Vertical Nor Horizontal: A Theory of Political Organisation (Verso\, 2021) and The View from Brazil: Neoliberalism\, the Far Right and the Grammar of Disintegration (Verso\, forthcoming). \nMakeda Bernard-Quashie\, Afrikan ConneXions Consortium \nBrings a breadth of knowledge and experience to a diverse range of Black civic society and economic activities. She is committed to developing the mutual sector and is currently co-ordinating the development of Zenzele Village – an intergenerational cooperative land and legacy initiative for Afrikan community self-repair. \nStephen Hilton\, Slowmentum \nSlowmentum is a consultancy working for an inclusive regenerative economy. It operates in the nexus between local authorities\, and local communities\, with a commitment to sustainable cities and community activism. Before founding Slowmentum\, Stephen was Director of the Bristol Futures Department at Bristol City Council. \nFriends from AngryWorkers/ Vital Signs Magazine \nThe AngryWorkers are a political collective who organise as workers in industries. In 2020 they published Class Power on Zero Hours\, about their experiences in warehouses and food factories in West London. Vital Signs Magazine is an AngryWorkers magazine by a small group of workers across the two main hospitals in Bristol. \nFacilitated by Claudia Firth and Martin Parker from the University of Bristol Business School. \nClaudia is a researcher working on the Fair Creative Economies project. She is interested in questions of organising\, alternative economies and strategy and coordination. She has written about the contribution economy\, mutual aid\, and prefigurative politics and has worked closely with community activist groups including being involved in the Bristol Commons. Martin is Professor of Organization Studies and author of (among other things) Shut Down the Business School (Pluto 2018). \nMembers from other Bristol based groups will also join us including Acorn\, Bristol Apartheid Free Zone\, Bristol Transformed\, and the Bristol Commons. This event is financially supported by the University of Bristol Business School. \nEntry requirements: no age restrictions

SUMMARY:Rave On For The Avon: Film + Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nA feature-length documentary that follows Bristol’s community fighting to save their river in unique and daring ways.\nDo humans have the right to nature? In “Rave On For The Avon”\, Director Charlotte Sawyer tells a story of a community of wild swimmers in Bristol (UK) affected by raw sewage pollution of the river Avon. England is one of the only two countries in the world to have a fully privatised water and sewage disposal system\, and with only 14% of English rivers in good ecological health\, the mission to keep the rivers clean is not going well. \nIn a series of moving\, exciting and thought-provoking scenes\, the swimmers create a stunning\, light-hearted yet fascinating tapestry\, probing how activism starts from the grassroots\, and carries a profound universal lesson for all of us. There’s a marriage to the river\, drum’n’bass\, a mermaid who tows an inflatable turd\, and a whole lot of cheesecake in this poignant reflection on people’s innovative battles for the natural world they cherish. \nFollowed by a Q&A with the Rave On community\, learn about the journey of the film\, and hear first-hand from those involved in the movement. The event will include poetry from the Avon Bride\, Mrs Meg Avon. \nModerator: Charlotte Kyle – a final year Spanish and politics student and the Trip Secretary of the University of Bristol Wild Swimming Society (@bristoluniwildswim). Charlotte is a journalist and an experienced communicator of environmental issues and will moderate this Q+A panel. \nQ&A guest: Elena Sedman – a final year German and music student and President of the University of Bristol Wild Swimming Society (@bristoluniwildswim). Elena will be one of our panelists\, as a fount of all Bristol swimming knowledge and an advocate for the physical\, social\, and mental benefits of wild swimming. \nRated ★★★★ by The Guardian – “Campaigning never looked so fun and friendly as it does in this joyous documentary about Bristol’s clean water campaigners” \nAbout the film:\nhttps://www.eightysita.com/raveonfortheavondocumentary\nhttps://www.instagram.com/raveonfortheavon/\nhttps://linktr.ee/raveonfortheavon \nDoors Open: 7 PM\nFilm Screening Starts: 7:30 PM\nQ&A: 9 PM – 9:30 PM \n\nEnabling Active Citizenship since 2019\nCurated and hosted by PRSC\, School of Activism events are designed to be empowering experiences equipping people with the tools to challenge the status quo\, contest power structures and ultimately to change the world.\nWe learn by doing.\nWe make our own future.

SUMMARY:African Apocalypse: Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Want to hear from people on the ground about the current situation in Niger? \nJoin us for a screening of the film ‘African Apocalypse’ which follows the university student Femi Nylander on a journey through Niger\, meeting communities who are still living with the legacies of colonialism\, as well as the young people determined to work towards repair. \nWe will follow the film with a call to action about reparations\, which will be the starting point of building solidarity with the indigenous communities in Niger and the generation of young people who are taking back their future. \nBehind the recent media headlines about Niger is an environmental justice struggle. SUMMARY:The Struggle Continues
DESCRIPTION:Opening party: Thu 17 Aug\, 18:00 – 21:00\nOpen daily: Fri 18 – Mon 28 Aug\, 12:00 – 18:00\nClosing party: Mon 28 Aug\, 18:00 – 21:00\nThis collaborative exhibition celebrates the success of 1963’s Bristol Bus Boycott\, alongside other tales of political struggle in Bristol and beyond. Artwork and stories from local artists\, community members\, charities\, and campaign groups examine where we have come from and where we are heading. \nThe Bristol Bus Boycott was a critical moment in the history of race relations and civil rights in the UK. However\, celebrations of this historic victory should not encourage a sense of complacency. The struggles for justice and equality\, and the battles of communities against oppressive authorities are ongoing\, and only by continuing the work of those that went before can we protect these rights of generations to come. \nThis exhibition is a reminder that we stand on the shoulders of giants\, that struggles can take decades\, and the fight for civil rights and equality is not over. \nDo you have a personal archive\, artworks or stories relating to the Bristol Bus Boycott\, the 1980s St Pauls uprisings\, Countering Colston\, Occupy\, BLM\, housing struggles in Bristol\, or the Kill The Bill protests and court cases?\nWould you be interested in lending them to this community exhibition? We’re not just looking for documentation of the headline grabbing events\, but the longer campaigns and work that went on before and after the cameras and journalists came. \nGet in contact via email hidden; JavaScript is required with an outline of what you’d like to contribute\, or bring them along to the show to add in real time! \nThe Struggle Continues is a collaboration between the PRSC\, @curiosity_unltd\, @oshiiblklgt\, and many other local artists and activists. SUMMARY:School of Activism & Journey to Justice present: The Long Shadow of Class - understanding inequality and galvanising change
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nSCREENING A NEW DOCUMENTARY ON CLASS AND EDUCATION plus open discussion\nJourney to Justice returns to Bristol to present The Long Shadow of Class: understanding inequality and galvanising change\, a new film designed to be used by a wide range of audiences. \nOur mission is to galvanise people to take action for social and economic justice through learning about human rights movements and the arts. We have a wealth of resources on a variety of topics\, including anti-racist education\, disability rights and the link between the environmental and economic justice. \nOur 2022 film considers the crucial role class and education in the UK play in creating an economically unjust society. It explores the lenses through which we view each other. \nExperts in their field from very different backgrounds discuss unequal opportunities\, accent bias\, the markers and stigma of poverty and the devastating effects of our current economic model. \nEach also offers ideas aimed at galvanising people to act for economic justice. \nOur six explainers highlight the need for those with lived experience to be at the forefront of policy decisions. They suggest how to effect change and inspire us all to develop a more just society\, needed now more than ever. \nThe film forms part of a unique\, rich resource created by Journey to Justice exploring the impact of economic injustice and how we can all challenge it. \nWatch the trailer: https://vimeo.com/747634419 \nEntry is by donation\, register for a ticket on Headfirst or throw some cash in on the door. \nFilm features: Shahajahan Ali (or Badgie Ali)\, a parent and teacher from South London; Professor Sam Friedman\, Professor of Sociology at the London School of Economics; Dr. Elizabeth Henry\, a consultant/ advisor/ activist/ campaigner and speaker\, she was previously the National Adviser on race and equality issues at the Church of England; Susie Morrow who started life as one of six children of an Anglo-Irish family in Newcastle upon Tyne. In 2021 and 2022\, Susie was short-listed as one of the most influential women in tech in the UK; Deb Neville\, a working class woman\, a mother\, a grandmother and a mental health social worker; and Dr. Ben Tippet\, a researcher working in the department of European and International Studies on the Leverhulme-funded project ‘The Political Economy of Growth Models in an Age of Stagnation’. \nThis is not the first time Journey to Justice and PRSC have worked together! Check out our 2017 collaboration on some key figures in Bristol’s history » \n\nEnabling Active Citizenship since 2019\nCurated and hosted by PRSC\, School of Activism events are designed to be empowering experiences equipping people with the tools to challenge the status quo\, contest power structures and ultimately to change the world.\nWe learn by doing.\nWe make our own future.

SUMMARY:Adblocking Bristol Airport's Greenwash
DESCRIPTION:TicketsIn 2020\, Amsterdam became the first city in the world to ban advertising for flights\, cars and fossil fuels on its transport network ad spaces.  Can we make Bristol do the same? \nBristol City Council has targets to become carbon neutral by 2030. At the same time\, it is providing advertising space for high carbon companies such as airports and airlines\, who directly encourage us to increase our emissions. Companies such as EasyJet are also using these spaces to greenwash their image making speculative promises about ‘Zero Emission’ travel far into the future to justify selling more tickets today. \nIn February 2022\, Bristol Airport was granted permission to expand to 12 million passengers per year after appealing against North Somerset Council’s rejection of their planning application. The expansion plans would result in 12 million passengers per year\, 10\,000 car movements per day and one million tonnes of CO2 being emitted annually. \nJoin Adblock Bristol\, Bristol Rising Tide and friends as we combine the creative arts practice of ‘subvertising’\, ‘culture jamming’ and ad-hacking with grassroots campaigning to remove big polluter advertising from our city. \nRegister in advance for your free ticket\, or just show up on the night! \n\nThe School of Activism 3.0 is a month long programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft. Running at PRSC during April 2022\, the events are intended to be empowering experiences equipping people with the tools to challenge the status quo\, contest power structures and ultimately to change the world.\nWe learn by doing.\nWe make our own future.\nThis project is founded on the ethos of community inclusion and empowerment\, so we offer pay-what-you-can solidarity pricing with no-one turned away through lack of funds. Please donate to help us keep the School of Activism affordable to all!

SUMMARY:New Tools\, Invented Futures: Care\, Work\, Technology
DESCRIPTION:TicketsJoin writer and producer Maria Leonard for an interactive workshop using co-creation\, creative writing and shared discussion on the plural trajectories for care\, work and technology. By centering the potential of imagination and the notion of ‘plural futures’\, you will go away with new tools and tactics needed to think about the way you want to live together with others in the future. \nTouching on the writing of diverse thinkers such as Arturo Escobar\, Ursula Le Guin\, to ideas and images of future forms of work\, community\, care and the technologies used to create them\, Invented Futures will take participants through a series of creative methods\, or “tools”\, for charting alternative trajectories\, ways of being together and the kinds of possible futures this can create in the face of uncertainty through four strands: \n★ Utopia as method: Governance Futures\n★ I do not dream of labour: Work Futures\n★ Robot Intimacy: Care Futures\n★ Entangled systems: Tech Futures \nBuilding on the research produced by the Invented Futures collective\, the session will introduce to the concepts of worlding and the commons\, organising practices\, emerging debates around living with technology and the urgent questions around living together. \nWe will challenge\, question and develop participants’ notion of what makes a future\, the kinds of people-led organising it takes to meet the demands of current future trajectories\, and the imaginative responses that we need going forward. \nBring along a pen\, your ideas and your imagination: imaginations are capacious and shifting\, big and restless: we can have everything we ask for\, everything we need. \nAbout Invented Futures \nMaria Leonard is a writer\, researcher and producer who has worked on the cultural aspects of\, separately\, the future and death. She is currently producer of Invented Futures\, facilitator at Theatre Deli\, and an associate artist at Spike Island\, as well as a poet. \nInvented Futures is a research collective which brings together artists\, writers\, researchers and technologists around the principles of speculative thinking to reframe dominant ideas about the future and its alternatives. We ask the following questions:\nWhat kind of knowledge\, systems and capabilities are required to imagine and build alternative futures?\nHow might speculation\, from thought experiments to fiction\, to performance and prototypes\, provoke dialogue and change? \nBased at Spike Island and with living labs throughout Europe\, the collective spans fiction writers\, researchers and organisations such as the Centre for Research in the Arts\, Humanities and Social Sciences at Cambridge\, the Centre for Global Knowledge Studies\, UCL Science and Technology\, Bristol Digital Futures Institute\, the Imagine Festival of Ideas and Politics\, and more. \nPay-what-you-can – there is a recommended price of £4 on the door at this event\, but no-one will be turned away through lack of funds. Book in advance or pay on the door. SUMMARY:Solidarity is our Best Defence
DESCRIPTION:TicketsWith Bristol Defendant Solidarity\, Bristol ABC and Bristol Anti Repression Campaign. \nLocal anti repression groups have been working hard to ensure defendants and prisoners from the Bristol Kill the Bill demonstrations have all our support and solidarity. We have met the state’s quest for revenge and punishment with a determined alliance of groups joining efforts to counter the lies and spin of the police and media and to stand alongside the defendants and prisoners all the way. Effective solidarity with those facing the wrath of the authorities for fighting back against the violence and escalating powers of the police is a vital part of the wider struggle against the PCSC Bill and this ever more authoritarian government. \nIn this session we will give an overview of the solidarity work so far\, discuss the importance of anti repression organising and look at ways we can continue to resist together. \nRegister in advance for your free ticket\, or just show up on the day! SUMMARY:'The Deep' Discussion Group with Bristol Utopian Book Collective
DESCRIPTION:TicketsThe Deep by Rivers Solomon is a short novel about mer-people descended from pregnant enslaved Africans thrown overboard on the passage across the Atlantic\, whose existence is threatened again by prospectors looking for deep sea oil beds. The book\, and the mythology it is part of\, have inspired real life memorials to enslaved Africans who died at sea. We’ll be discussing how fiction can help us think about racial justice and climate justice\, and inspire us to action. \nPay-what-you-can – there is a recommended price of £4 on the door at this event\, but no-one will be turned away through lack of funds. Book in advance or pay on the door. \nSome extra credit reading that will give you an idea of what you might expect\, both by Bristol Utopian Book Collective’s Sheryl M Medlicott…\n★ ‘It is time to challenge colonial ways of thinking wherever they are found within our culture’\n★ Literature and Activism: Octavia Butler\, farming and community \n\nThe School of Activism 3.0 is a month long programme of workshops\, talks and activities brought to you by Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft. SUMMARY:The 1970s Counterculture in the West Country: The story of the Bath Arts Workshop
DESCRIPTION:TicketsFrom the late 1960s through the 1970s the counterculture helped to make the West Country fizz with creative ideas and events. One of the most successful ventures\, locally and nationally\, was the Bath Arts Workshop. As a spin-off from London’s influential Arts Lab\, BAT was a loose collective of artists and community activists. To describe it as a community arts group\, however\, would be to under-explain its work. It was that and much more as it proliferated into festival organisation\, media production\, hosted national alternative technology events known as Comtek\, and challenged homelessness\, ecological destruction\, racism\, and the destruction of historic buildings. \nTangent Books have recently published Bath Arts Workshop: Counterculture in the 1970s\, on the history of the initiative launched in 1969. This event will be a rare opportunity to hear co-founder Phil Shepherd and other authors in conversation\, remembering\, celebrating\, and reflecting upon the Bath Arts Workshop’s relevance for the present day.
