Naomi Klein visited Bristol on 1st July 2017 for the much anticipated talk about her new book: 'No is not enough. Defeating the new Shock Politics'. PRSC gave her a warm welcome on her way to Bristol. 20 years of Klein's activism Other books by the award-winning journalist and bestselling author are No Logo: Taking Aim at the Brand Bullies (1999), The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism (2007) and This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate (2014). No Logo focuses on branding and alter-globalisation; The Shock Doctrine addresses the deliberate strategy of 'shock therapy' on the exploitation of national crises to push through unpopular policies; and This changes Everything tackles the most profound threat humanity has ever faced: the war our economic model is waging against life on earth. Manifesto for resistance Klein's new book No is Not Enough was written in just three months, but it is based on 20 years of research. While the world is still figuring out what Trump is and how to deal with it, Klein puts him into context, and provides us with a strategy to ground our resistance. She explains how the first step of protest is for a huge number of people to take to the streets. She stresses the importance of valuing our history: people without a sense of history are malleable.  A great example for thinking is dystopian fiction. Picture a scenario (for example doing nothing about climate change), carry it through to its conclusion. If you don't like the end - don't go there. Abrupt and drastic policy changes can cause people to rebel, too. Trump pulling out of the Paris climate agreement in June 2017 prompted the Mayor of Pittsburgh to declare his explicit support for the guidelines of the agreement. Interestingly, the commitment to the climate agreement may not have become so polarised with leaders explicitly speaking out in favour of it, if Trump would just have let it slide quietly. The importance of vision and narrative Resistance, furthermore, needs a vision, a utopian imagination. We need to have the courage to picture the world we want, to go beyond 'it is not getting worse'. Klein stresses the need for an overarching vision beyond thinking of the next phase. A broader goal enables movements to persist, and not be burnt out over time. In addition to a strong and utopian vision, we need another narrative, a positive story we agree on, and want to engage in. We need something for people to say 'yes' to. And we don't need to wait for anyone to start doing this. Why PRSC finds this important If you keep half an eye out, you know we are quite taken with Naomi Klein. In 2015 during the Bristol Green Capital, we offered her book This changes Everything for only £5 as part of our Bristol Green Fringe 2015 activities. Also for the Green Fringe, we painted the Bearpit Cube with her message about System Change not Climate Change. As from last week, we are offering her newest book No is Not Enough for only £8, because we think it is an important book to read. Our wall on the M32 was painted on 29 June 2017 by PRSC. It got an honourable mention at the start of Naomi Klein's talk in Bristol - well done guys!
