On Saturday 18th and Sunday19th July, The infamous Hillgrove Street battleground saw the latest skirmish with the Anti-Graffiti team… The mural below was painted, with permission of the owner once again… On Monday morning our wonderful BCC Anti-Graffiti team wove their magic… and rendered the corner site a lovely safe black…
Apparently, the estate agents (who deal for the owners) had given carte blanche to our intrepid anti-graffiti team to buff anything… So, with obviously blind devotion, they set about their business… Again, there was uproar amongst the local community, and general scratching of heads…
Ranjana Pandit of Radhika Fabrics wrote to our local councillor, saying,
I am a local business man, and we were happy to see a nice mural painted on the shop with Landlords permission.
The chess table which was on Turbo Island has been removed under pressure from the Police and from some residents, but certainly not all… The existence of the table on Turbo Island acted as a focal point for street drinkers, as Turbo Island has always done…
The table highlighted a problem central to all those who know and love Stokes Croft… There is always a hardcore of drinkers in the Croft… who congregate here, because all the services are local.
On Thursday afternoon Roy, who is caretaker of Elim’s sheltered housing on the corner of Hillgrove and Jamaica Street, alerted me to the fact that yet another fine specimen had been laid at his doorstep… A regular occurence.
For an area full of pubs, clubs and street drinkers, the lack of nearby Public Toilets has meant that Turbo Island’s sub-station has been an open latrine for many years.
Whilst he was up a ladder cleaning off the damaged Banksy Mild Mild West, Chris Chalkley of PRSC was handed this letter from Denise James, Project Officer for Bristol Clean and Green.
Banksy’s Mild Mild West was got at again last night 23rd June… Looks like it was the same person(s) who did the piece down at College Green. From the look of it, it was done with paintbombs or from a paintball gun… It was easier to tidy up than the last attack, mainly because there was much less of it.The piece still looks OK from a distance, but is beginning to show the strain of repeated attacks, on closer inspection.
We have been sent this flyer by a representative of one of the more “underground” groups in Stokes Croft… Inviting you all to get down to the Bear Pit and make your presence felt…
Starting on Saturday June 6th we retake an important part of Bristol which has been neglected for years.
This Saturday, Tom Tibbett, with a little help from Rich Hogan, made flowerbeds and planted flowers on Turbo Island, using kit supplied by PRSC.
Jamaica Street Studio’s Annual Jamboree approaches. The usually secretive Jamaica Street Artists painted the Jamaica Street hoardings over the Bank Holiday to advertise their week-end, and jolly good it looks too…
On Friday 5th June, there will be an auction of their splendid work… As a fundraiser.
Cheo and 3-Dom at work..
Bristol City Council have issued an apology of sorts. See below:
“We would like to apologise for the removal of a mural in Stokes Croft by our graffiti clean up team.
