Bristol City Council will present the three short-listed designs for The City Road/ Stokes Croft Corner Site.

The chess table which was on Turbo Island has been removed under pressure from the Police and from some residents, but certainly not all… The existence of the table on Turbo Island acted as a focal point for street drinkers, as Turbo Island has always done…
The table highlighted a problem central to all those who know and love Stokes Croft… There is always a hardcore of drinkers in the Croft… who congregate here, because all the services are local.
How times change… Stokes Croft can’t seem to keep itself out of the media these days… Last week, the Casualty TV crew filmed around Stokes Croft, and drama ensue on Stokes Croft… Hardly anybody noticed, because these kinds of scenes have been fairly normal over the past years…

On Thursday afternoon Roy, who is caretaker of Elim’s sheltered housing on the corner of Hillgrove and Jamaica Street, alerted me to the fact that yet another fine specimen had been laid at his doorstep… A regular occurence.
For an area full of pubs, clubs and street drinkers, the lack of nearby Public Toilets has meant that Turbo Island’s sub-station has been an open latrine for many years.

Also, the long suffering bush in the middle of Turbo Island has flowered for the first time in a very long time, perhaps a portent of new beginnings for the Croft…
This Saturday, Tom Tibbett, with a little help from Rich Hogan, made flowerbeds and planted flowers on Turbo Island, using kit supplied by PRSC.
Jamaica Street Artists have adorned the former carriageworks with bunting for the upcoming Open Studios. This year’s Open studios threaten to be more professional than ever, since JSA aim to impress the Arts Council and the Great and Good, since they are aiming to buy the building and to be captains of their own destiny… Good luck to them…
