Government troops inspect captured South African tank, Angola
Here’s the story: Between 1975 and 1990, apartheid South Africa attacked neighbouring black-ruled states for sheltering South African ANC guerillas. They sponsored a bush war in Mozambique occupied Namibia, fought a full-scale war in Angola, killed hundreds of thousands and displaced millions.
First harvest after the war, Mozambique
The photos show what these countries endured, and their resistance. Ultimately the apartheid government was defeated, but kept this history hidden.
Sadly, migrants to S Africa from neighbouring countries were fatally attacked. The exhibition was commissioned to show S Africans that those they recently attacked had in fact helped them gain their freedom. The photos will be contextualised with essential text and a map, and at some point I will give a talk that looks at the issues of both xenophobia and hidden history as this relates to the UK.
